Question PSU cable motherboard connectors

Hi,
I have a Gigabyte Z370P motherboard running with a Corsair CX650 and I just upgraded to a CX850 intending to get a 30xx series gpu.
My issue comes when trying to connect the 850W PSU to the motherboard. It didn't seem like the connector fit it. I compared the connectors between the 650 and 850 and it seemed the 850 was marginally larger. Do these connectors change in size as time goes on? And will I need to upgrade my motherboard to be able to accommodate the PSU connectors?

The connectors are the same for over 2 decades. It has to fit.

You mean CX850M? That's not a decent purchase if you need 850w for a 30xx GPU. Return it and buy a better PSU. At least Tier B from this list https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/

My bad, it's a RM850e, not CX850. Cheers for the list.
I'll try the connector again, but I just couldn't get it to go in when I was trying yesterday.

I have tried again, but the connectors is about 1mm or 2mm too large for the connector on the motherboard. So there is a slight sizing issue with the connector.

In the process of trying to get a good picture it slotted in. I feel like an idiot, but at least its sorted.
