Hi I am suspecting that my RM550X PSU have died after trying to jam a USB into the plug, or from me unplugging the USB. The USB was stuck and I pulled it out, then try plugging it back in the same port to find that it was impossible to insert it in.

The PC then proceeded to shutdown or I have manually shut it down (no sure if I did since I left it for a second then came back to see a black screen).

I will be ordering a PSU replacement but anyone know of other solutions or if the new psu would do the same since the ports might still short circuit

Thank You,
Chao

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS information.

What USB port: front panel or I/O panel?

You may have physically damaged the port creating a short.

With the computer unplugged and case opened use a bright flashlight to inspect the USB port and surrounding components for signs of damage.

The damage came from the front panel ports. I have tried unplugging the connectors to it but nothing works.

When shinning a flash light inside the port one of them seems to be teared apart inside. Not sure how it even happen

USB plugs can only be inserted one way into the receiving port.

If you had the plug misaligned with the port then the "jam" likely broke things.

And I would suspect an electrical short(s) as a result.

Damage may be greater than is visible.

Especially if unplugging the connectors did not work.

You will need a knowledgeable person to take a closer look and determine the full amount of damage and how to repair the damage.

Damn.
I just hope my graphic card is fine.

I would of thought the PSU would have some form of protection from that and at worse it might have taken out the USB ports the header was connected to

Not sure either.
Cause it first started when I tried unplugging the same USB cable out, finding that it was stuck there. I may have used too much force, leading to the inside to tear out but using a flash light I can also see that there is metals as if it was melted and bent.

Sometimes the PSU has a fuse that can be replaced either on the back of the PSU or inside of the PSU but I wouldn't advise you to take the PSU apart if it has an internal fuse.

If everything else fails to resolve the issue send it back to the manufacturer via an RMA, check on their website about returns and there is a good chance it will be covered by the warranty.

The only value of the "paper clip" test is to confirm a dead psu.
If you did the test correctly, your psu is likely dead.

I think it is more likely that it is the motherboard that is gone.

Your psu is a good one, and may have a 10 year warranty. Try a corsair rma.

Yeah I have sent one, now waiting for reply.
But do you think it would be too risk to re-use some of my PC parts if I just replace the PC case with the broken port?
