I recently purchased an 850watt PSU, was very different from my previous one, it has a very large fan underneath, im presuming this is an exhaust fan.. great! however, i have no intake fan on my case to draw air in.. so ive always left my case open, both sides removed.. i wish to put them back on now as im having to clean my Graphics card everymonth as the dust build up is a lot.. i tried putting a fan on the front of the case and it was nice and quiet until it came into contact with the case as i tightened the screws.. it struggled to pull air through the holes in the metal, this made the fan very noisy so i unplugged it.. is it ok to cut a large hole where all the little holes are so when i mount the fan again there is no resistance..

Not all cases have a vent at the bottom for this, dont put it fan down if there is no vent it will die

Im using an MOD Computer at work so cant log into photobucket to show you the type of case i have.. so i uploaded a pic to my website using a phbpp forum.. my case as shown in the picture is different, the one in picture has a vent on the top, mine does not.. the exhause vent on mine is below the psu on the rear top, and an intake on the front bottom.. the fan on the psu must be an exhaust fan because its on the top where the hot air rises.. regardless, my question was regarding the intake fan on the front of the case, when i put a fan on it to draw air in it struggles because of the pattern of holes.. can i just cut this out so its a big hole .. its an old case so im not worried about munching some holes in it if it helps me to put the sides back on .. just dont want to wake up my babies with a noisy case fan

I would just leave it facing down then pulling air in from the case. You dont need to leave the side panels off though. Cutting the mesh away from the case at the front will have the same effect as leaving the side panels off (bringing in a lot of dust), what fan are you trying to mount?

Most cases have the psu at the bottom these days so it is an intake. You can cut the hole if you want it will stop the sound of the air coming through the mesh but it could let a lot of dust in the case.If it does you can always but a magnetic filter to chuck on the case

i might stuff some of my mums tights and stretch it over the hole where the fan will go once ive cut a hole in the case.. if i use a few layers it should provide sufficent filter and still remain quiet.. or is there something else i could use, fishtank filter foam maybe.. pondering me is

Tights could work i guess, the magnetic ones are just easier as you can just pull it off and run it under the tap to clean it and then put it back in (after its dry of course). It shouldn't be too bad without the filter if you are willing to give it a clean every few months, it should not be as bad as with the panels off
