I know this will have no doubt have been asked and continue to be asked over the next few weeks but just looking for a little advice.

Current specs
CPU - 7700k @4.8ghz
M/Board - Strix z270f
GPU - Strix 1070 ti
H/Drives - 2x Samsung sata SSD's
1x Samsung NVMe
1x HDD
PSU - Corsair RM650x

Looking at upgrading to the RTX 3080 (Wont be FE, will most likely be strix variant) and just seen Nvidia and ASUS are recommending a 750w PSU.

Question is should i upgrade my PSU or shall the RM650x be enough?

Thanks in advace

Let's be real here guys. He wants an RTX 3080. Do you really think a quad core cpu is a good match? No It isn't. No way I'd pair that monster with a 7700k. Especially at a time when next gen console CPU's will be 2x the cores. Temporarily doing it is fine but it's the last of the quad core era from intel. It's still fairly new yes but it wasn't a good buy even in 2017 due to Ryzen. I would go for either Ryzen 7 3700x or an i5 10600K. You can't go wrong either way. But I think it will definitely be interesting to see if pci 4.0 is really going to offer benefit. Again. Either way it'll likely still perform excellent. Maybe even still better with intel. But as far as the differences in CPU performance goes it's kind of a wash as you...
will it be enough? yes, specs are quite overestimated, but when it comes to psu its always a good idea to play on the safe side... specially on something as expensive as a GPU like that, so, I'd upgrade to a 750/850, but i know people wont be moving from a 650.

Thanks for the fast reply. Still a few weeks out anyways so plenty time for influencers to get their hands on it and bench it etc.

Thanks :)

Do I have to be the one to say it guys?

Waits for someone else to say it....

OK... sigh... Your CPU will likely need upgraded which means you'll want a new motherboard as well. I know it sucks. But games are demanding more than a 4 core CPU these days.

Any recommendations? I was actually looking at the 10600k recently.

Before you go buying a new cpu and motherboard what resolution and Hz is your monitor? That will be a significant factor in deciding if a new cpu is likely to be needed. Also until there are benchmarks we don’t know if pcie 4.0/3.0 will matter, many including myself expect no or very little benefit from 4.0.

10600k is perfectly fine, theres no way the 3080 would saturate a pci-e 3.0, that in theory since we dont have many 3080's around testing left and right, now considering the z490 is pcie 4.0 compatible, you can later upgrade to a 11gen cpu that will be pcie 4.0 compatible.

you cant go wrong with either intel or amd, but true, amd is pcie 4.0 out of the box compatible, and frankly, if you really want you can either wait intel 11gen or amd 4000 see what it gives, the 7700k will handle for a while, but just for a while.

oh and one more thing, even if theres a boost on pcie 4.0 over 3.0, its likely that the small but still there sheer performance power of intel processors will make any difference negligible...

Im running 1440p @ 144hz

The cpu and mobo will no doubt getting upgraded end of the year or beginning of 2021 so no rush on that front.

i see no problem at all running at 1440p, i wouldnt say 8k with the 3090, no, but even 4k wouldnt get to the limit, but its always better to play on the.. better side, either get a z490 or go on the amd front with b550, either support 4.0, though intel is behind on the compatility front, so, even though it shouldnt matter, perhaps waiting the 11gen on Q1 2021 should be the better deal, or go amd 4000

I'd rather have it and not need it though than need it and not have it though as far as pci-e 4.0 goes. I've even heard of the rx 5700 xt gaining a slight performance advantage with it. The RTX 3080 is far far ahead of the 5700 xt.

You could get away with a 3070. Although come the 4000 series you'll wanna upgrade again if you do that most likely.

Again, thanks for the advice. I fully agree the 7700k wasnt the best buy in 2017 ha, we live and learn huh. Ill more than likely wait until Q1 21 to see whats what. I do like the look of the 10600k and z490, but seriosly considering Ryzen too, ive never had any experience with AMD in the past.

what the dude said is pretty correct, just last month i bought a 10700k, my system is too 2013 despite being perfectly capable with 1080p, thing is that the occasional BSODS on overclock suggests my cpu was weary and i had to clock it back, for some reason i hear pops on my speaks and headset and noises something connecting and disconnecting, so my cpu could give in any second, because the Z490 boards supports 11gen and pcie 4.0, i just took my chances, unless pci-e 4.0 somehow proves itself revolutionary, i think with a 3080 im set for good 5 years, no plans to go beyond 1440p, and still rocking a 980 so.... if pcie 4.0 proves just, nil to few performance increase, i wouldnt bother trying to get my car go faster by installing a bigger fuel tank, and well, by the time the eventual RTX5080 can push pcie 3 to the limit, its likely we'll need to replace the mobo for DDR5,, so i try not stress about myself, but if you can, indeed wait.

if pcie-4 do some sorcery tricks, ill just sell my 10700k anywyas and buy a gen 11. meh.

Now, you've opened up a can of worms.
