PSU for GF3 to ATI9800Pro

Does anyone know how much more power an ATI 9800 Pro draws compared to a GeForce3 Ti-500? I've got a 350 watt PSU at the moment and it does just fine but, with the 4 hard drives I'm running, I'm not sure if I need to get a new one for extra head room. I'm getting one of those Sapphire 9800 Pro cards from Newegg next week. I guess if I'm borderline, I'll push my luck.

BTW, does anyone know how much power a standard Antec 80mm fan with led's pulls? Just trying to add everything up.

The GF3 ti500 is a great card. But if you really want to play the latest games at the best settings then the Radeon 9800Pro or 9800XT may be a great option. Check first if the card has good heatsinkers on the memories. And if you can afford it, try to get a wather-cooling system. And if its still hot, then put the fu%$ing case in the icebox with the beers =p

I'm not too concerned that I'm overloading the PSU at the moment. My APC LS 500 says I'm only pulling about 225 watts. Of course, if the majority of that is all on the 5 or 12 volt rail, then its a different story, heh. I'll just hook everything up and if it dies, Compusa is right around the corner. I've got gift cards

I can't justify the extra money for a 9800XT over a Pro. I mean come on, $268 versus $451. With all the benchmarks being so close, its a no-brainer. Of course....I might splurge and get the 256mb version.

There's a good chance you will need a new PSU. I highly recommend Fortron.

What does your post have to do with anything?? He wasn't asking for a GPU recommendation, but rather wondering if his PSU could withstand the extra power requirements of the 9800Pro.

Oh yeah, he wasn't worried about heat at all. When he asked about the 80mm fan, he was referring to how much power it draws, not it's cooling.

I'd have to disagree with you...9800Pro eats a lot of power, and he doesn't have the simplest system as is.

Of course, I assumed that his current PSU is a Noname and that he hasn't installed the 9800Pro yet. 350W is enough, but if it is a noname, it's not 350W. But if he's installed the 9800Pro and it's running okay and he just wants to know if he should upgrade or not, then the answer's no.

All I know is that I'm set when I go to upgrade my GPU...gotta love a Fortron 550W PSU!

I ordered the Sapphire 9800 Pro 128mb tonight. I guess we'll find out Tuesday if the current 350w PSU will handle it and everything else. I know I should be okay heat wise since the average temp in my case is 77F with a room temp of 70F.

I wish I were as good/lucky as you with OCing...0% is possible on my 2.66B, and only about 10% on my Ti4400 is possible. My 420W Nonamer was starting to crapout, too.
