PSU for HD 4890

Solution
You would probably be ok with that but you may want to consider the 500W version, a little more money up front but only $5 more expensive after rebate.

There's also this 550W that should fit the bill and again, only slightly more expensive after rebate.

I have the 4890 in my system currently (waiting for the new ones at the end/beginning of the year) and I remember it calling for a 500W or better PSU when I bought it. Just a thought.

I doubt this PSU will work for you unless it delivers the full 33 amps. on the 12v rails. You may want to check www.jonnyguru.com or www.hardwaresecrets.com for a review of this exact model PSU and see what they show for 12v rail power on the two combined 12v rails.

HD4890 is a bit of a beast power wise. It can use over 200w, close to 250w if you overclock. Certainly wouldn't try to run it on the 380w myself. The 430w may work but you'd be pushing it pretty hard which is generally not a good idea.
I'm not seeing many good PSU deals on newegg right now. I'd probably go for this;

or this if the rebate doesn't matter to you;

Don't be confused by the 520w vs 600w, they both have the same amount of power on the +12v rail which is what matters.

250W? The PSU that the OP linked in the OP can do 384W on the 12V rails, more then 100W then a system with the 4890 will use. How big of a buffer do you want him to have??? I think the 380W will do 29A (don't remember) which is 348W. Exactly how much overkill do you want him to have?

Yeah, really wasn't planning on overvolting at all, or spending more than $50 on a new PSU. And how could the card use over 225w when it's only plugged in to two 75w six-pin connectors? I don't think I'll be pushing the 430w PSU to its limit, but I might get the 500w Earthwatts if there's a really good reason.

System, not card. First, keep in mind that the card can draw up to 75W from the PCIe slot as well. So its total possible draw is up to 225W. Going from this site the maximum power draw for this card is 190W.

http://hothardware.com/Reviews/PowerColor-Radeon-HD-4890-LCs/

Assuming that's the case, and adding another 100W for the CPU and up to 50W for the rest of the system, you're looking at around 340W max. That sounds really high to me for some reason. 380W might not be enough, the original linked PSU should be fine however.

It'll give you more overhead, and the pair of 6 pin power connectors needed for the card, for the same money after the rebate.

I won't be overclocking, and probably not replacing my 65w cpu with a 95w Phenom II X4 until I upgrade my card to an HD 7850 or so. (The HD 4890 was a happy and unexpected stop-gap solution for the games I own, while I'm saving to upgrade to a more powerful 100-150w current/next-gen card.) So I'll save myself the hassle of waiting an eternity for a rebate gift card.

And check this out, everyone:

I'm positive my 65w + 190w setup will not draw more wattage than Tom's overclocked build. (125w cpu + 150w gpu)

If you want to objectively, accurately and scientifically determine what PSU power is required for your Vid card and PC in both watts and 12v rail amps., the forum Utility link below will show you how easy it is to calculate this information and objectively determine which PSUs are quality built, reliable PSUs that can meet your needs.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/314712-28-please-read-determine-power-required

So again, as i said in the other thread, let's assume the following and do some math
the OP has
CPU (high end quad core overclocked) consumes 141W
RAM 2 sticks each consume 4 = 8W
say OP has 2 HDDs = 20W
2 ODD = 16W
Add in card = 8W
5 fans including CPU = 15W
MOBO OCed = 55W
GPU 200W (maximum power board for the HD 4890, Not OCed)
Total = 463W

So basically a 380W PSU wouldn't help

The OP might not have the above configuration, so technically a 380W PSU should work just fine but it will be pushed to the limits, the PSU will work hardly 24/7 which will cause the capacitors & Coils to heat up and the PSU will crack immediately.

And as i said in the other thread, diff PSUs don't deliver the same wattage to each system..

Thanks to dirtyferret for pointing me to the source ( http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 916-7.html )
Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

I saw a lot of reviews and i know how the HD 4890 consumes power, but taking the assumption of overclocking CPU, GPU required me to remove the idea of getting even a 430W PSU.

Anybody should add plenty of wattage to his needs in case of future upgrade.

Okay, well I won't be consuming that much wattage, since I have a 65w CPU, 1 SATA HDD, 1 case fan, 4 sticks of DDR2, 1 DVD drive, a non-overclockable Dell mobo, and no additional PCI cards... The only upgrade I plan is a non-overclocked 95w Phenom II X4 (mobo cannot handle more), and a GPU that requires only 1 power cable. But +1 for the link, beenthere - even the strong 430w Earthwatts doesn't have much amperage headroom. Annnnnd I found $10 in my wallet.

This card was a gift, so I said SURE - 50% more performance for free? Sign me up! Anyways thanks for all your help - I'm getting the 500w Earthwatts b/c of the amperage headroom in case I decide to clock the mess out of the 4890.
