I currently have a
Seasonic s12II 520w +80 bronze
i5-4590(h97m plus)
2 x 4gb ram
hdd
internal dvd drive
4 case fans (3x120mm)
1080p (wants to dsr)

issues:
500W is the MINIMUM psu requirement for a 980
another site says that i need 42a on +12v (but mine only have 40a)

i want to know how well my psu can handle playing games on high and ultra without overclocking the gpu

Solution
If I could give you some good advice even if the minimum rating for running a 980 GTX is a 500W power supply with at least 42 Amps minimum provided on the 12v rail.

As close as you are with a 520w +80 bronze.
You will be putting the Psu under some heavy load when running a game that requires maximum potential out of your 980 GTX card.

When your looking at a PSU you will often see Peak power out put.
The peak power rating is not provided 100% of the time of operation of your power supply.
It is more of a plus percent of voltage for a limited period or short time when demand is required of it.
The more it hit`s or get`s closer to that peak out put value puts more strain on the Psu.

It is up to you, but I always recommend people to...

Partly due the fact on some Psu the peak is the quoted maximum output of the Psu but as i said that value in watts is not a constant it`s time limited on some PSU.
