I have a 650w blue star psu (kinda cheap I think), I want to buy a gtx 970 or amd r9 390 to run on it. Can this power those gpus? and is there any risk of burn out or damage if the psu fails? Im running;
Amd a series black edition ( phenom?)
8 g ddr3
Radeon 6700 series (5870)
1080 p res
650 watt psu, not 80 rated that I can see

Solution
I wouldn't trust it for those cards. Especially the 390 which will consume more power. It claims to have 35A on the 12v rail (which is low for a PSU of that wattage) and it's not 80 plus certified, so we don't know at what load it can make those claims, it may only work well at 20% load and as soon as you start a game with one of those cards, instant shutdown.

I would go with something 80+ Gold if you're looking to power those cards... safely.

This is more expensive, but you've got a 10 year warranty, it's manufactured by seasonic and sold by EVGA (so you get their *excellent* support). And you don't have to worry about the next thing you want to add, or the overclock you want to increase...

I agree with the above friend, I also got that particular psu and it's excellent.

Thanks for the quick response! Im new to pc so I think a modular psu doesnt have the cables hard wired like mine. If so does it come with all the needed lines , or are they a seperate purchase?, thanks
