Can anyone recommend a good, and preferably free program that would allow to measure how much power (in watts) my system using while performing various tasks? I haven't gotten around to downloading msi afterburner yet and i'm not sure if that will help me with this? Isn't there another program like afterburner by asus that also measures gpu performance?.... I was recommended to use cpu-z.... is that good for measuring cpu performance?... Any stress testing and bench-marking software recommendations would be appreciated as well.

babachicken is is correct there is no software alone that will measure wattage use. you can use the fore mentioned hardware (best choice IMO) or you can purchase a UPS (uninterruptable power supply, A.K.A back up power supply) with a digital readout and only plug in the tower to it and read the wattage used during your chosen tasks.

stress testing programs= Prime95, Intel Burn Test, Memtest86+, OCCT only for GPU testing though.
Bench marks = 3D Mark, unigine valley, unigine haven, Cinbench 11.5. all mentioned programs have a free demo or full program.

FSP (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5MiEuizehQ&t=123s) has a monitoring system/application(FSP Guardian v.1.0) for their PSU's? Surely someone must have developed a generic monitoring system for PSU's to get total KWh usage etc

I think that you are right.

Being sarcastic and not actually reading the whole thread proves that your intention is not to help. If you did read you would see that This thread was made in April of 2014 in which I did respond then with the best options at that time. Still today those solutions still are the best solutions as very few PSU manufactures and even fewer PSU's from them actually have any type of monitoring "Software" that can monitor the PSU. The OP was looking for "Free Software" that could monitor the wattage that was being used with the current system. Unless you already own a PSU that has monitoring capability's then there is no software that can monitor wattage used.

Since this thread is now over 2 1/2 years old it is safe to say that the OP has found a solution that will fit his/her needs.

Again, since your new here, Please do not resurrect old threads.

Could a moderator please close this thread? Thank you.
