PSU is missing power cables to run graphics card

i bought a GTX 1060 6gb GPU and the recommended power supply is 400w. my computer has a 550w PSU but lacks the correct power cables (8 pin /6 pin & 2 pin) i read up on it and people tend to say that you shouldn't use adaptors for poor dispersal of the correct wattage and instead to upgrade my power supply. but the GPU and PSU should be compatible.

Picture does not show. Which GTX 1060 6gb did you buy? Some do ship from the manufacturer with a two 4-pin molex to 6-pin adapter. While not ideal, should work. Major issue is the PSU. If lacking PCIe connectors it may not be set up to provide the 12-volt current loads required.

General rule of thumb, if the PSU does not have the correct cables for your GPU then it cant handle your PSU.

There are some exceptions but 98% of the time that rule is a good one.

What you have to realize is that power supplies are not created equally.
A quality PSU will not only have a valid 80+ rating (warning some companies are faking these), it will also be able to actually output the stated max load for a sustained period of time, not only that but they have many safegaurds built into them to keep your parts safe. A cheap PSU on the other hand will usually not be able to sustain a 65-70% load, are horribly inefficient and when they die (when not if) they almost always take out GPU and/or motherbaord with it; some of these units have even caused house fires.

^^ well said. A shame how importance of a quality PSU is so often overlooked. Even more shameful how some manufacturers play upon that mindset and manipulate numbers.

It's not a such bad idea to use adapters just make sure the connectors are of steel and wires are thick.I am telling this because i too use adapters and it has not caused a single issue in last 1.5years.Hope that helps.

Just because your PSU is ok (or becaue you have been lucky) does not meant that it is a good general idea to use adapters.
The OP has not listed his power supply thus it is completely unsafe/irresponsible to assume that the PSU is in the small category of ones that are sufficient to run the card but just lacked the connector.

Your power supply came with the adapters, or your graphics card came with it?
If your graphics card came with it then your GPU manufacturer absolutly has no idea what power supply you have or if it is safe or not, the fact that included adapters in no way means it is safe, just means the GPU manufacturer would rather risk you frying the card vs you returning it because you cant wire it to your PSU.

If you have a nvidia x50 serries gpu or amd x60 gpu or less then your GPU is not pulling enough power to stress most PSUs.

Interesting, never seen a PSU come with adapters before.
Although in that case my general rule still completely stands. Your psu DID come with the connectors (just in the form of adapters). The OPs PSU did not and thus is much more risky.
