So my friend purchased a cheap second hand PC which naturally had a poor psu. So, as things normally go, the psu died when switched on at the wall after an earlier crash, there were popping sounds heard and the psu definitely smells burnt. The PC would not turn on after that.
My friend then came to me asking what to do. Coming to the conclusion it must be the power supply I replaced it with a higher quality one (FSP 80+ gold 750w), the PC then powered on fine and seemed to be working normally. We then shut it down but as it was doing that, at the point where there is no display and the fans spin for a bit then stop, the new power supply started smoking so I immediately switched it off at the back. There have been no previous issues with this psu, with higher power draws.
So this makes me think that a component is somehow killing these power supplies but I cannot figure out how that is even possible. After checking the other components for visible damage I decided to give it a go with a cheap gpu (that I wouldn't mind if it died) instead of the HD 7790 currently installed. After that it seems to work fine, with the psu that was smoking (FSP one) and other gpu. I have been running prime95 for half the day (under constant supervision), including multiple restarts, stressing the cpu and ram with no smoke or any other issues.
So the questions this raises are:
Is this gpu (HD 7790) a power supply killer somehow?
Was the new psu smoke just some freak coincidence?
Should I see how it goes with the old gpu (HD 7790) back in it?
Did the old psu kill the gpu and because of that now hates all other power supplies?
Is it safe to use?
Oh, forgot to mention, I'm not 100% sure the smoke was from the power supply but I noticed the smoke near to it and I don't know what other component might smoke.
