So the company i bought my psu from had the volts switched to 230. So when i started up my new build it started smoking. The weird part is the smoke appeared to be coming from the motherboard so i need to know if any of you know what might be fried besides the psu

Motherboard, CPU, Memory and PSU are all possible. Guess you learned the hard way first rule of PSU is check the voltage setting before turning on. Most likely the PSU is still good as it should have shut down upon sensing the short caused by the over voltage. Motherboard most likely dead now and if you were lucky it shorted and burned fast enough before the memory and cpu got damaged as well.

Switching the red switch on the back to 230 shouldn't hurt the PSU as it disables the voltage doubler, it won't work but it shouldn't violently die like it does the other way when you set it to 115 and are on 230. You also bought a PSU that is quite old, no efficiency certification, no active PFC, but luckily it doesn't have a ton of 5V capacity so it is at least more recent than about 2003.

You say smoke started coming from the motherboard, have you looked around to see if anything looks damaged? If it looks like it got burnt it is likely toast. You cannot tell what else died with a PSU without having a good PSU to test with, but i would not replace it with another Apex PSU that is asking for trouble.

Here's a review of your PSU, Jonny had his fail catastrophically when he was only pulling 340W from it, and about 23A from the 12V rail, that isn't much. Your system would likely have made it over heat and die within 6 hours.

ok the mobo has one small burn mark on it so it most likely toast right?

At your price point from Tiger I would recommend (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=125449&CatId=5431) over the one you linked. I bet if you look at the underside of the MB you will see damage. When you get the new PSU, I would remove the cpu, memory and anything else installed on the MB before testing. If the MB is any good the lights on it will come on. If they do it is still not 100% that the MB is OK. My bet is you will need to replace the MB.
