The last couple weeks I've been experiencing a couple issues and I'm having an issue narrowing it down:
■ The computer will randomly shut off. Completely off. No restart - just off. Can be mid game, could be at the desktop.
■ I can be mid game and the monitors will go completely black. Unplugging them and plugging them back in does not solve it. Only a restart will bring them back.
I've considered that maybe it's a GPU issue but with the hard shut off I'm leaning towards a power issue or mother issue.
Other things I noted:
The main PSU connection to the motherboard was loose, or making a bad connection. At one point I could wiggle it and watch as the board would partially power up but no fans, LEDs, etc would actually light. Re-inserting it seems to have solved this and it no longer cause issues.
Motherboard: ASUS Z170 Pro
GPU: Gigabyte 980 TI
CPU: i7 6700K
Cooler: Thermotale Water 3.0
PSU: Thermaltake 750w Bronze (getting old - from 2012 which furthers my suspicion)
RAM: Corsair LPX 16GB 3200MHz (XMP)
No overclock besides the XMP. Various HDDs / SSDs. BIOS is up to date. I've checked connections and verified temperatures during full load - they don't get hot. I ran Prime95 + Furmark at the same time and temps got hot but no shut downs, nothing out of the ordinary happened on either my CPU or GPU.
I cannot replicate the problem, stress tests do fine. But it still happens. Last night it happened it happened 5 times total and three of them were back to back (monitors going black).
I'm getting frustrated because I can't duplicate it and I don't want to just throw a new PSU or motherboard at it because I'm planning to hopefully do a complete rebuild in a couple months.
Any advice?
Thanks all
