Hi,

I have an issue with my PSU (Gigabyte p1000gm). There is a noise from the fan of the PSU as heard in the attached video in the following link

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QAQH_T7_TtSnqcEcOj9xaqrOdkwPc1dx/view?usp=share_link

The noise occurs when the GPU (MSI RTX 3090 VENTUS) is at medium loads during gaming or benchmarks (~140 - 180 watt). The noise occurs when the PSU fans are about to spin but they do not spin and keep moving just slightly and stopping as shown in the video. However, if the GPU is fully loaded (~350 watt), the fans spin and the noise disappears. Also, if there is no/low load (<100 watt), the PSU fan is not spinning and there is no noise.

Any help with the reason for that and how to deal with that noise? It is very annoying and I am afraid it could result in damage to the PSU components in the long run.

Thanks in advance.

As the cultists network tier list says:
Early models\wattages of Gigabyte P-GM had massive QC issues
Is the PSU old? If the fan won't spin at low RPM, the motor is probably damaged, but the worst that can happen is the fan dying completely (possibly causing the PSU to start overheating.)

However, I wouldn't recommend replacing the fan yourself due to high voltage in the capacitors. I'd ask some third-party repair shops about it (only one with good reviews) but it could be better to just buy a second-hand Tier A PSU, one that's not old.

Thanks Krzeszny for the reply,

It is a two months old PSU. The noise (and not spinning fan) is only observed at the moderate loads. I verified that via GPU benchmarks that result in different wattage needed for the GPU.

I didn't know that this line of PSUs from Gigabyte had massive QC issues as you mentioned. I will check with the local warranty provider if the PSU could be replaced with a proper one or returned.

These psu's have a sort of eco mode where the fan doesn't spin under a certain load/temperature, guess with the load you put on the psu it just is in that zone where it might start spinning. Just like gpu's usually have these days.

That would be a good idea.

I wouldn't be going with a second hand PSU for a 3090. The OP needs a good RMX1000 that can take the transient spikes for these GPU's.
