PSU or GPU causing power shortage?

I've already made another thread on my issue, but I narrowed it down to the power delivery.

While playing BF1, my RX 580 only draws 130 watts max during intense battle, this cant be normal and I have no idea whether its my GPU or PSU, because my CPU doesn't seem to be taking a power hit.

think I used firestrike bench for that [?? ] but different games / programs put different loads on a card . some games don't even make that card use 175w or so what ever . maybe that bf1 just aint taxing the card to its full draw ?

thing is these newer AMD cards are funny on how they use power and how to read it . like the rx 400 series there were power issues with them

try that firestrike or maybe heaven bench and tak there readings and see if they don't push that up a bit

Is your ram filling up? I had that issue with my laptop causing the game to freeze and constantly struggle. Your build should really be fine.

No, rams fine. I looked around a bit and i think i found the solution, apparently has to do with pcie settings in BIOS, I'll try it in a couple hours hopefully it works, I'll keep you updated.

so I ran FAR CRY 2 in the mean time and see it never got my card to full power limit just maxed it to 128w in full fighting and all I could put it to in that game

you can see unlike firestrike that got the card like 275w far cry 2 just don't , BUT CPU load / demand is higher so like it maybe BF1 is more to CPu bound then GPU bound

with far cry 2 you can see where a best CPU helps it - it just depends on if its leans more to cpu or gpu on demands .

you see guys with the old '' got new more powerful gpu but no performance gains threads ?? that's maybe a lot due to that game maybe needs better CPU then it needed GPU and why no gains with a new better card ..

seems like bf1 needs a good cpu as much as it needs a good GPU may google that .seems it more CPU bound / intensive game ?

it uses as needed up to what ever the bios of the cards limit is so ?? say your card has a 8 pin and a 6 pin + board slot power is 300w

75w slot - 75w 6 pin - 150w 8 pin

with that your card maybe set for say 275w - its easier to see with a NVidia card like here for mine for a example

you see its a 250w card with + 10% 250 and 10% added = that 275w limit set in the bios

I would not worry about it not hitting the max all the time cause its going to use what it need as needed and things your running just may not be stressing it enough to need its full max power draw

then your comparing a sapphire card to your giga card ?? see may have different v-bios set parameters . your card may not be bios capable to do 200w ?

thing is with AMD they don't state that like NVidia cards

they don't have any rx 580 listed but like this giga rx 480 none of that info stated

same 150w , but now how much % over that is it set for to do safe ?? see it could go 200w if the cards bios allows befor any throttling occurs


your screen shot show a 150w card + 50% for a max of 225w ? see you still may not be stressing it to bang that 225w yet and may not ?

think your card is working fine and as normal

I guess the benchmark doesn't detect 580 over 480? anyways that's not important.

Im worried about the temps as you can see... almost 20 degrees higher than a test published by a user with a similar set up as mine

I guess the power went up by 10 watts up to 195, but that's still a fair chunk lower than the 220 shown on benchmarks. I would overlook the 150 watt number, its probably just an error.

I think your card is fine and working as normal with them watts used / normal .

I use a hybrid card so I cant comment on temps over a air cooled card , but that 72 c is nice not hot at all at that full load

your platform and card are just released , so its hard to know if your good bad or average ? I see under fire strike scores with my CPU and your card results don't score as well as my 980ti so looking at the difference there I feel your 2457 score you show maybe good and on par [???] pretty close to scores I see in 2 rx 580 reviews

I'm so baffled, so I just finished playing BF1 and it played so smoothly and held 80+ frame on ultra. Last night it could barely scrape the 60's...

So I thought of any changes I might've seen/made from last night till now, and i realized that usually, when my computer booted up, it would take 10 seconds for the display to get a signal from the GPU (which isn't normal and im looking to fix that as well), and after the GPU sent a signal to the monitor, i would see the bios and post screen then boot into windows. But today when i turned on the computer, it still took 10 seconds for the monitor to turn on, however when it did turn on, i was straight on the windows lock screen and not the post screen like before. Its incredibly confusing to me and i have no idea what has triggered this, but i'd love to know.

Anyways so when i was playing BF1 today, the FPS was perfect, on ultra i'm getting 80+ FPS, with the SAME wattage and GPU usage as before. Funny thing is that when i die and the menu shows up, my fans start spinning on 10000000 RPM and when i spawn they slow down again.

Obviously the coil whine is still there, so its clear my silicon is far from good, which i will get an RMA for, but its out of stock atm so ill have to wait.

PS: the benchmark i did was after my latest boot, so that's probably why the results are acceptable, if i did it last night it would've been much worse

maybe you got some new updates like from Microsoft that were needed and helped ???

like I sais the cards wattage will just use what it needs as needed my card does the same its not going to use full max watts under everything

like I showed with far cry 2 game it don't use much as it will under firestrike your worrying about nothing and normal just because its set for 220w max it may never need to reach it to run efficiently

I ran farcry 2 for 2 hrs and my card only used 170?? watts ? and its a 275w card . but that did not affect performance at all its just some thing are not as demanding on the card and like said bf1 is more toward the cpu the gpu

I probably should have noticed this earlier, but I didn't. The motherboards "GPU LED" remains red when I boot into windows, could that be the issue? what does that indicate?

maybe ? should tell you in the motherboards manual . on my boards red means bad .

Well well well.

RMA'd the RX 580 and replaced it with a GTX 1060.

Coil whine is now gone but the low gpu usage, fps lag and stutter still continues...

Ill do a clean install of Windows again, and if that doesn't work, then i guess the PSU is getting RMAd too
