Hello everyone,
Yesterday my computer randomly shut off and it wouldn't turn on again, I reacted by unplugging the PC from the power socket and trying a new one to see if it worked and it didn't. I then turn the off the power supply and wait 30 minutes and the PC starts to power on again and works like normal, and I notice a strange burning smell so I just turn it off. The next day I start up my PC and play a game, around 20 minutes in my PC is unable to connect to the monitor, I'm on discord and my friend can hear me and I can hear him but the screen is black and is not detecting a HDMI signal, so I test the monitor with my laptop and it is working fine. The PC can still turn on but it is not detecting a HDMI signal I believe. My PSU is 2 years old and is a Be Quite Pure Power 600W and the GPU is a EVGA GeForce GTX 970 which is also 2 years old. I recently installed a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD a month ago but have not had any problems if that helps. I don’t know what’s wrong and what component I need to replace or how to fix this problem.

Hi!

First of all, to identify the problem we have to remove the side panel of the computer and check for any visual damage on the Power Supply Unit, or the Graphics Card.

- Turn off your computer, and unplug the power cable from the power supply.
- Remove your side panel, and get a screwdriver
- Remove your graphics card and your PSU. Guide on this can be found HERE

- Check for any visual burns on your graphics card, as well as smelling it for any smell of burnt electronics.

- Do the same for PSU

If you see any visual damage, the component is most likely defect.

To check if the PSU is in working condition, connect it to your PC and try turning it on without the GPU installed.

If the computer turns on, try to install the GPU, and turn the computer on again. Check if the fans are spinning on the GPU, and if the lights are on.

Conclusion:

- If your fans on the graphics card are not spinning, and no signal is detected, your GPU is most likely defect. You can control this by using/borrowing another GPU to test if that gives your a picture.

- If your PSU smells burnt, and does not provide power to your computer, you need to get a new one. If you can, use another PSU for testing before ordering a new one. Defect power supplies can sometimes damage other components in a computer.

Hope it works out for you :)

Solution

It could be a fried PSU, but his computer turns on and gives no picture, so he should check if the GPU is the issue before buying new components.

I agree on the part that he should get a testing component, but swapping a part without knowing there is an issue with it is not good for your wallet. As long as the computer turns on, there should be no issue with the PSU.

Most likely his graphics card got fried, and the computer shut off
