PSU popped but still running

so last week i built a pc had a freind give me some parts got it put together had it running so i went to try an old hard drive i had to see if it still worked i had bought 2 but never plugged the second one in so i pluged the old one in first and nothing happend so i was shutting down my computer it takes ahwhile to shut down so i thaught id swap out the hard drives when i unplugged the hard drives i herd a whining noise herd a pop saw some sparks come out of my power supply and it crackled a bit till i shut it off

so question is the computer was yet running till i hit the master switch on the power supply i didn't smell anything burning after thinks its safe to try and turn it back on

I wouldnt trust the unit anymore.
It shorted (in a drastic manner apparently) so I would recommend a new unit.
