PSU Problem Source?

So the other day i was on my computer and i had just finished playing a game and i was organizing some files. Then i heard a loud pop and my computer turned off. I opened it up and a wierd smell was coming from the psu. I looked it up and saw that some people had the same thing happen to them. My question is did the psu mess up on it's own or was it something else.

Sounds like the PSU , BLEW UP , more than like just a bad power supply.

But the thing is i bought this computer used but it's custom built and I added another harddrive to it about 2 weeks ago. Could that have caused anything. Also on the same day i had just installed new video drivers

No , more than likely it just died , drivers and a single drive added wouldn't cause this.
