OK so having an excruciatingly annoying problem and really need help.

My current specs are as follows:

Mobo- asrock 980de3/u3s3
Ram- 16gb 1333mhz
Cpu- fx6300 (soon to be fx8350)
CPU cooler- thermaltake silver arrow
Hdd- 2tb
1x DVD re writer
PSU- corsair ax850 gold rated

If I've forgotten anything let me know. Basically I was running a sapphire HD 7850 2gb and all was perfectly fine. Figured I'd upgrade my GPU and bought a sapphire r9 290 tri x oc. Second one I've had, still same issue where my computer is restarting itself. Really baffled by this now and frustrated. Certain psu calcs say I require a psu with 1200w others say 550w, really need your help guys please.

That delay does suggest a temperature issue, have you run the tests yet? What were the results?

Embra, I needed a replacement PDQ and that was the best available retail here in Norwich (Norfolk, England) at the time.
Of course I'll replace it with something better.
At some point.
In the future.
Agree on the PSU, I'm running a R9 290 Tri-X OC off a Corsair CX600M (I know naughty me ;) ) but it's no problem, whole rig runs smooth as a smooth thing that's coated in Teflon.
How is it restarting? Is there a bluscreen? Do you loose signal then a restart? Does the system slow down then restart?
If you don't already have them onboard, download and install HWInfo, then GPUZ, they're great little freebies and a boon for monitoring/troubleshooting.
Using HWInfo, check the CPU and GPU temperatures and the PSU voltages-the voltages may be incorrectly reported so don't be alarmed if they seem unrealistic.
Then run GPUZ, click on the little blue '?' beside the PCI-E info box to start the render test then, with the test running, click on the sensors tab, this isn't a very hard test but it'll highlight any obvious possible problems-the temperatures should all stay nice and low, even the VRMs run cool on these cards. Expect to see plenty of random spike in use, though I've no idea why it shows this, Afterburner shows a steady use profile so I'll guess its just a little gremlin with GPUZ.

As far as I know nothing at all wrong with my psu. As for connectors I use two separate cables but with the over clocked version I have it actually uses two 8 pin connectors. Also on the first card I had I actually tried three different psu's, one 650 bronze rated a 750 and this 850 I have now.

I have the same GPU and your PSU is better than mine. If all is functioning properly, you will be well under the load of that PSU.

Double-check that both your 24-pin and 4 (or 8) pin motherboard power connectors are properly connected from the PSU. They should be firmly attached with the retainer clip in the locked position.

We still need to know when the restart occurs. Immediately after power-up or after Windows attempts to boot?

Temps are actually comfortable. Idles at around 35c for gpu.
I think I might of actually figured the problem out not sure yet having to soak test to make sure though.
Basically I was talking to a friend that works with electronics and he was explaining about amps, currentand and volts etc... Stuff that hurts my brain lol. So I checked on my PSU no labels for the volts so got a diagram up on corsairs website and the sockets I was using are 3v and 5v, so switched to middle sockets which are both 12v and no crashes/restarts for two hours. Gonna see how it goes and I'll let you know if that was the issue :)
