[SOLVED] PSU requirements for an RTX 3080 Ti ?

I am looking to buy an ASUS RTX 3080Ti. I current have EVGA 650W Supernova Gold. I have used the Cooler Master and Outervision PSU calculators, both of which tell me I can get away with as little as 550W and above.

Is this correct? The ASUS website recommends 850W...

CPU: i7-9700KF
MOBO: ASUS Prime Z390M-Plus
RAM: 32Gb G.SKILL RIPJAWS DDR4 3600MHz
GPU: RTX 2070 Super
OS: Windows 10 Pro

Your graphics card is a factory overclocked version that takes some 150w more power than a typical 3080ti. (three 8 pin connectors)

a quality 750w unit can often deliver better than advertised power at peak.

I have no problem overprovisioning a PSU a bit. Say by 20%.
It will allow for a stronger future graphics card upgrade.
It will run cooler, quieter, and more efficiently in the middle third of it's range.
A PSU will only use the wattage demanded of it, regardless of it's max capability.

The good news is that 850w may only be $30 more than 750w.
Look for a quality unit with a 7 to 10 year warranty.
I think you are pushing it into uncomfortable territory. I’m running a 3080 and 3700X on a high quality 650w. I have measured usage up to around 550w although the average in game is around 450w. Both your cpu and gpu will take more power than mine. I don’t think it is worth the risk.

PSU calculators are not very good.

I would get a high quality 850 watt at least those cards also have large power spikes.

I think the minimum required PSU for the 3080 is 750W. I am currently running a 3080 with an 850W PSU and have had no problems. Are you planning to upgrade your CPU any time soon? I have been researching the 10900k/11900K and even the Alder Lake 12900K and they all use crazy amounts of power. I am planning on bumping up to at least a 1000W PSU when I upgrade my rig.
 
What nvidia says their cards will do and what they actually do is 2 different things

Running time spy on stock settings

stock 100% power spikes at 107%
stock power draw 250w spikes to 310w

@ 124% power spikes at 131%
peak power draw at 366w

So going from a 2080 ti with 250w power draw to a 3080 ti 350w, I would look in the neighborhood of 400w power draw with around 20-30w peak jumps. Remember the new RTX cards overclock themselves, if it stays cool enough and has the power head room it will boost the card past the stock boost settings. My card says its boost speed is 1755Mhz but will typically run at 1935Mhz on stock settings.

Just saying if your already buying a PSU i would rather over watt for the card then buy something that doesnt work then have to buy another one bigger.

According to this thread you might as well get a 1500 watt power supply. As for the person who quoted new world that is a drive/game issue it's not common nor should it happen.

I have run my 6900xt on a 650 watt evga psu since the card came out with zero issues paired with a 5600x on a x570 board.

Is it better to buy bigger then you need yeah most likely but 1000 with a 3080ti is laughable.

Yes new world has game/driver issues, that was not the point. The RTX line of cards are know for overdrawing power. Time spy was released july 2016 at yet it overdraws power on my card, on average it will see 90-95% power usage during the test with very quick peaks above 105% and that only from what evga Percision x1 is telling me.

As you can see if these cards have the power and stay cool they will boost to the moon, that a 395Mhz boost over the stock 1755Mhz boost that EVGA claims for the card
