PSU upgrade for new GPU?

Hello,
I know there are probably threads that have more or less the same theme but I figured its better to ask.
My rig is basically a i5-4570, 8GB DDR3 (2x4), 256 SSD and 560Ti. Right now I am using a 450W PSU. Since my 560Ti failed (all the colors are messed up and I think its gone for good) I am considering a 960 or the 970.

1) is it normal for a GPU to fail after 4 years, or is it too soon and I should be worried that maybe the 450W psu has something to do with it (since nvidia recommends a 500W for 560Ti)?
2)which gpu to go for - just personal opinions
3)should I upgrade the PSU for either GPU?

Thanks a bunch 🙂

most likely your power supply is failing

yes, get a tier 1 or 2 unit in 500w or better from this list:

like a antec HCG 520w for example

Thanks for the replies!
I have a Chieftec A80 450W. And as I was checking the GPUs power requirements in the list you sent and the recommended is 430W. So I am stumped.
I guess if I go for the 970 a new PSU is a no brainer (the price is small in the context of 970), but with a 960 I am not sure if a new PSU is worth it..

Chieftec A80 450W

most likely it is a 300w unit, - barely -

as chieftec is pretty horrible and often lies about the rated wattage of their units

that alone makes it mandatory to upgrade it, im not surprised you are having issues with a 560 ti on it

What would you say to a Seasonic SS-500ET-F3? That would seem reasonable for a 970...? right?

yes, it should handle your system
