The asus came back with 400W and the other one came in at like 310W ... there is no way in hell i would run an 8800gtx on anything less than 500W with some awesome 12v Rails.

Maybe you should lower browsers standards just a touch, keep in mind that those figures are minimum standards.
You might have a little malware running in the background, a quick scan would be wise.

Precisely, calculated figures are bare minimum ratings.
The sensible mind tells us that we need at least 25% headroom.

My system is very power hungry and topped the charts at 550W minimum, i compensated for my planned upgrade to the 6400+ with 2-1GB sticks @ 800MHz
I found it interesting that my current system configuration uses more power than my planned upgrade,
the 5200+ combined with 4-512KB @DDR2 800MHz uses 50W more.
I figured the faster processor would compensate for the missing RAM, at least the FSP 750W PSU will be happier.

For a q6600, sli 8800 gts, 1 dvd, 5 fans, 2 hdd's, a sb xfi, and a few USB ports, etc.

Right now I have a core 2 e6750 and everything else listed above, and a 650Watt seasonic s12 80+...

ANyone with good experience want to tell me if this PSU is enough to run the q6600 in this config?

* Majority of the power in my system is off the 12 volt lines either way the 600 watts asus told me i need was wrong....but it over estimates. this may be a good thing. a 8800GTX is supposed to take 132watts(or somewhere in that area). Asus puts down 150. They over rate some other items too.

In the end it all comes down to PSU quality. If i had a 450 watt psu with 25-30 amps of 12 it should run my system fine.

@ bornking - That psu specs 52 amps MAX of 12 volt power. can you confirm this? it should be good to go thats as much power as many 700 watt PSUs anyway. I am willing to bet if you got a kill-a-watt meter you would be surprised how much headroom you still have....

If you can get a G0 stepping...do it they save some power too.

I ran your config on the eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite v2.5 I assumed high end board, 2 sticks DDR2, 5 120mm fans and 3 USB. With 100% cpu usage and no Capacitor aging I came up with 495W for the PS. With an OC to 3.0G @ 1.25V I got 510 watts.

That doesn't take into account sufficient amperage on the 12v rails. I don't know whether they are lying about the 18A limit on the 12V rails but they do make Corsair and at least the Silencer series for PC Power and Cooling, which are single rail (even though Corsair states they are multi-rail).

This is because I could not find any proof that this PSU had more than two 12V rails; at the most three. And I found that even if there were three 12V rails, there is no OCP (over-current protection) or any circuitry in place that disrupts continuity between the multiple "rails." We'll discuss this further during the autopsy.

It's a different model but I would suspect that there are many similarities probably including the rail layout. Seasonic makes a quality PSU so I don't believe you will have any problem using you current Seasonic 650.

I don't find that ASUS calculator to be very good just playing with it.

Started with Intel Mobo - It said 50watts. A little High. OK we want head room I can live with that.

Added a Q6600 - It added 150w for a total of 200w. (The TDP is only 105w for the old Quads so that is a big overage.)

I added a 8600GTS - It added 0w. Odd?
Then I changed it to ann 8800. It now added 200 more.

Now the 8800 takes less than 200 itself and definately not a 200 difference between these two GPUs.

5 case fans = 0w.
10 case fans =50w.

It counds 50w for every (2) HDDs. 0w for the 1st. 50w for 2nd. 0w for 3rd. 100w for 4th.

Note: The Wattage for the CPUs was also well beyond the TDP by about 50%. You are talking a serious OC and volt increase to see these numbers.

I can understand wanting to overestimate, but failing to add anything for some items such as the 8600 or in other cases only counting multiples and adding big jumps just does not make sense. This causes the headroom to be lost.

If you are buying online, a few places are promising the "G" stepping, so look around. NewEgg seems to be shipping that version, but not promising it so, you are taking a bit of a chance.
