[SOLVED] PSU will not power on if CD/DVD uses SATA power

I have since "fixed" this problem but I've been building for over a decade and I've never seen this so I thought I'd ask what might be causing it. I have a 99% brand new build with a secondhand CD/DVD drive. Using a 650 Gold focus plus Seasonic PSU.

Basically the PSU will not power on if I use a SATA power cable in the drive. The drive doesn't have a port for molex. The "solution" to this problem was using a molex cable and then a molex to SATA adapter. Everything powered up fine after I did that. I tried this with the brand new PSU as well as my own PSU (also a 650 gold plus focus) and both the problem and solution repeat.

Also wondering if there might be some sort of obscure hazard in my solution. I don't mind just getting a different dvd drive if so.

Solution
Could be the sata power port of the dvd drive is faulty, most likely. Psu is detecting a short. That's the only explanation.

Make sure the sata power cable you're using to power dvd drive belongs to the psu and not from another unit.

Psu industry don't follow a standard and pin outs can differ. Meaning if use a cable from another psu that happens to have +/- pins in different spots, this will cause a short and if psu is any good will detect it and won't power up.

Replacing modular psu means all cables as well. Only exceptions are data cables and extensions.

The sata cable is the one that came with the PSU. The same goes for the molex cable and sata adapter.

I'm still using the SATA port but obviously whatever pin is faulty isn't being used with the molex then. Do you think theres any danger in keeping it this way?
