Hello! My current PC build is
Mobo: MSI z390 a-pro ATX
CPU: i5 9600k
Ram: 4x8 gb corsair vengence lpx 3000mhz
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 4gb
SSD: PNY 250GB
HDD: 1TB
PSU:500 Watt for a M-atx board
Case:NZXT H700

My case is too big for my M-ATX mother bored. My First PC was a prebuilt Asus G11-CD and I wasnt going to invest in a new powersupply if i didnt have too, but my NZXT H700 is too big for the short cables. So I currently have my PSU on the outside of my case, on a flat wooden surface and I am wondering how much wattage I would have to use to make sure it was okay(I was thinking a Corsair CX 750 watt) Also, I need help with my CPU Cooling, because I just have a stock intel Heatsink, but i was looking into the NZXT Kraken vs the Corsair AIO. What should I do?

I’d ditch that PSU and buy a new one ASAP. Whatever was in that thing is likely not 500 real watts and who knows how cheap it is. Only buy a CXM if you are going cheap. Just CX aren’t good. I’d recommend getting a gold rated TXM. 550 watts is likely enough but if you want to get 650-750 for some growing room that would be recommended as I’m sure you will want to upgrade that GPU eventually.

As for cooling, I would not touch a 9600k with a stock intel cooler. You are trying to kill your brand new stuff for sure lol. Buy, at a minimum, a evo 212 or gamaxx 400, preferably water cooling if you really want to go that route. Nothing smaller than 240mm, preferably 280mm. EVGA has the best 280mm AIO, however you can’t go wrong with NZXT or Corsair.

I wouldn’t touch anything that doesn’t have 50 watts after the first number. 550, 650 etc.

The cooler master is a decent 240mm. A Corsair cx650m is the cheapest PSU I’d use and that’s stretching it.

However, the EVGA W1 600w 80+ is garbage. Likely better than a cheap OEM unit, but not good regardless.

A Corsair CX would be much much safer.

Only buy a CXM if you are going cheap. Just CX aren’t good.

You are aware the grey CXM is inferior and of an older design compared to the grey CX. The standard CX are actually better than the CXM units.


This CX650 for $45 after rebate is actually overkill for those components, and is a very good deal.

I think you got some facts wrong. Grey CX-M are the newer models. The green ones are the ones to avoid. Yes, a TXM is much better, but OP apparently wants to put a cheap one in there.

Corsair CXM (2015) use double forward
Corsair CX (2017) use llc resonant.

Both are grey label and decent, but CX are better than CXM unless you want modularity
