PSU's??

Hi Guys,

I am in the middle of re-building my old Gateway 2000 P200. I've only really been using it for email the last couple of years at home, but it's now time.

I'm on a very limited budget (as my wife's has politely pointed out) and am trying to plan a system with a fare amount of upgradability. I got most of my direction here at Tom's.

I'm going with the following spec's to start off with:
AMD Duron 800 - I plan to overclock.
ASUS A7V133 - this is upgradable to about an 1.2 Tbird.
256 MB PC 133 Micron RAM
Global Win FOP32-1 Heatsink and fan.

My only stickler is the Power Supply - I want to go with at least 300W, but not sure what kind. I have noticed that Enermax is popular, but is not on AMD's list for compatablle Tbird PSU's.

Any help would be appearciated.

Actually Enermax is.. but for Athlon 1000Mhz they recommend
the 450W or 276W models

And for Durons,

Your right, but when you put the MHZ up to a 1333 in an ATX, it is not listed - only up to the 1000.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

AMD is not known to update those lists with any particular regularity. It's most likely the case that they just haven't gotten around to officially testing the Enermax PSUs with the newer CPUs. I've never seen anyone claim to have problems with an Enermax PSU and I've seen plenty who say switching to Enermax solved their stability problems. If you can afford it, I'd put some trust in these users' experiences.

Thanks for the insight. I have ordered an Enermax 450W PSU.
For the little bit of extra money, I think it will be well worth it in the long run.

Good choice! I also got an Enermax 431W. I have always bought high quality power supplies after my friend bought the cheapest case/PS he could find and it fried his entire system...eyerything!

Everything?! Since I don't have the mula to throw around that would set me way back.

One question, how are the fans in the PSU for noise - anoying load or what you come to expect from a main stream machine?

Mine is the FC (fan controlled) model so it is practically silent. The only problem is that the PS doesn't move much air since the fans spin so slowly.
