Psychotoxic: finally a review is out for it

At last, someone has finally given a review to this game. But this game
doesn't look too good. Filled with bugs and poor level design. And check
out the two bitmaps in the link below. I know that it's only one reveiw,
but it would appear that this game ran out of steam even before it was
released.

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/psychotoxic/review.html

"Expect these bugs to corrupt save games on a regular basis. And when the
game's good and tuckered out from that, expect it to faint directly to the
desktop. Sometimes your weapons will refuse to reload until you cycle
through them a couple of times. Other times, Psychotoxic will grind to a two
or three frame-per-second halting stutter for the remainder of a level. "

I intentionally worded it that way.... but now I'm wondering if difool has a
search filter setup to automatically detect any newsgroup posting with the
s-word in it? ;-)

It's something to do with the way he replies to posts. I use Google
Groups and it colours the old post blue, so I can see what's what.
SayNO always manages to reply with the "so and so said this:" but then
not including what tey actually said.

Another observation:
A little while ago, another user bemoaned the fact that what could have
been a perfectly good discussion about a game turned into yet another
SayNO battleground. I forget what the original topic was now, or who
that other user was.

But if you recognise yourself from that poor description, look at this
thread. It starts out as a link to a review of a game that SayNO is
interested in. And he turns it into an attack on the op because of his
choice of newsreading software. Even when there is a thread about
something he is interested in, he can't help trashing other people.
My trollometer has just swung another degree upwards.

Overall: bad. Wait for the bargain bin and then only if you're
really bored. I mean, the game has color coded keycards for crying
out loud!

Voice Acting: bad.

Graphics: mediocre

Plot/Storyline: What plot there is, is thin even for an FPS. (Doom
III had a better, more consistent plot.) Plus, you can drive 747s in
reverse through the plot holes.

Weapons: MP5 and M-14 were good. Everything else was subpar or
useless. (Never had a reason to use the shotgun or the chaingun.)
The dream sequence weapons were unusual but nothing worth writing home
about.

Level Design: On rails. A few of the dream sequences stood out, but
not overly so. There was one stealth level, that coupled with the AI
(see below) makes it the worst level in the game.

Bugs: After a while it would CTD. No savegame corruption problems.
It would CTD if you died while time warp was on. Not terrible.

Titillation: None. Even the heroine in her hiphuggers and 50%
visible thong wasn't sexy.

Enemy AI: Not much. You get X units away and within line of sight,
the enemy spotted you. If you were really close, you were spotted
(even through walls.) Mobs waited until you triggered them (i.e. no
base alerts that would send a sqaud of troops at you.) No suprise
attacks from sudden respawns, or busting through a previously
unopenable door, or even spawning behind you unexpectedly.

In short, a mindless fps without the redeeming qualities of a mindless
fps. Parts of the game strike me as a college computer graphics
project. So simple and so on rails, that there's no need for anyone
to create a walkthrough.

I have been using Agent for years, it is still the best IMO. Using

The only downside is that its default settings are rather poor and you
need to spend a while turning it to your tastes, but once done you
never have to do it again.

Are you using the full version?

My luck, I'll buy it and it doesn't work with WinME. ;-)

Thunderbird just isn't ready for primetime yet, it's just that Firefox
popularity is rubbing off on it. Try Agent instead, you can download
it from www.forteinc.com . It's the best newsreader there is for PC,
in my opinion.

Yes, the basic one doesn't have killfiles and spell checker I think.

I have had Agent working with 95, 98SE, 2000 and XP Pro without
needing a reinstall, I just setup a shortcut to it. I have even had it
working in Linux via wine. I think it is safe to say it will work in
ME :)

The best way to use it is mostly via the keyboard, "n" skips to the
next unread message (and preferably set the option to mark it as
read), "i" ignores the thread, "backspace" goes back through the read
messages, and shift-backspace goes forward through them again. It is
so fast it saves you so much time over OE.

Ok, I'm using Agent now. But heck! You all didn't warn me about
ALL the features in it! :-0

It took me 15 mins just to go thru all the different color opitions
and fonts. ;-)

I changed a few things around to suit my preferences. But one thing
that I have yet to figure out is how to get it to display the message
vs me having to double click it.

Currently if I hit the N key, I see something like "Msg has 14 lines."
And then I have to double click with mouse to read it.

I think you can sort that on out by right clicking on a group name,
select Default Properties>Retrieving Messages>Tick "Retrieve bodies
for all new messages". There are another load of options you may like
to check out in there too :)

As I said, it can take a lot of fine tuning, but it is a joy to use
once you have it set up right :)

I go through all the threads, hit W to select the ones I'm going to
read (I don't have time, nor the desire, to read every thread). Hit
the Blue down arrow to retrieve the bodies and use the spacebar to
page through them, when it hits the end of a message it just pages
right to the beginning of the next message.

Next time I get headers, the threads I've already selected from
before with W (for watch thread) will automatically have bodies
retrieved, that way I only have to scan the headers of the new threads
to see which ones I want to follow.

For some reason I didn't like the default color scheme, I ended up
with red for old threads, blue for new threads and upping the message
fonts to 12 to make reading a bit easier on my monitor (I tend to run
at high resolutions). I was also impressed when they finally added
the option to scale the size of the quickbar buttons.

I'm also a fan of tabs rather than extra windows, hit the z key and
see which you like better. Welcome to agent, you won't regret it. :)

That reminds me - is there any way to set that to only download bodies for
unread messages? I've been setting my killfilter to mark postings as read,
and using that option auto-downloads those killed messages anyway.

I do know about the CTRL-N workaround - hold it down, and it queues up all
other messages for downloading - plus I have a progress indicator on how
many posts still need to be downloaded.

Other than this small issue, Agent is perfect.

It's not worth getting worked up over.

>type of box?
Regular sized box with a cover that can be opened. Games of
this quality do not normally get such a nice box. I'm thinking it's
camouflage to trick people into thinking it's a good game.

>manual?
Yes. Lists the mobs, weapons and powerups.

Nope, and it's not needed. wasd to move. shift to crouch, e
to activate your power up. Number keys to select weapons. q & e to
lean.

cd

>number of disks?
3

Paper sleeves.

Heh. If you start the game with the wrong cd, you get
prompted for a cd key. The game doesn't come with a cd key... You
have to start the game with cd 1 in the drive.

>overall quality?

Like I said in my review. It's barely bargain bin material.

To all you Agent users, thanks for info. I'm going thru the online
Help and playing around with some of the features. Plus, I plan to
visit the Agent web site and see if they have a FAQ there. But
here's a few questions.

1. I found where CTRL+N opens the next unread msg and expands it.
Can I remap this to the N key instead? (I didn't see 'remap' in the
Help section)

2. I'm confused on where I can save a posting that I'm working on.
For example in Outlook, the save msg goes into the Draft folder.
For this current msg, I see 'Save Msg As' under the File menu. But
it's dimmed out. Under the Message menu, there's a 'Save' command.
But I can't figure out where it's saving this msg to. The online
help mentions the

3. I got a strange error when I attempted to send two different
posts. Both were related to timing out type error. I played around
with the General Preferences, but for some reason I keep getting
timeout error.

4. Where are the sent msgs? The only folders that I see are the
newsgroups and the trashcan.

help mentions the

3. I got a strange error when I attempted to send two different
posts. Both were related to timing out type error. I played around
with the General Preferences, I hope I have it so that Agent doesn't
go into offline mode anymore.

4. Where are the sent msgs? The only folders that I see are the
newsgroups and the trashcan.

How do you mean expand? I always just use the N key which opens the
next unread message and I have it set to mark it as read. I don't
think you can remap the controls.

You can click on Send Later and the message can be accessed in the
outbox (Window>Open Outbox).

*shrug*, it is a bit hard to work that one out without a lot more
information.

Look in the Window menu option.

Currently I have Agent setup to display msgs sorted by Subject.
Agent shows me a thread (expanded) in the following format:

Line Subject Author Date
57 Psychotoxic OldDog 3/30/05...
31 Raymond

If I single click on an unread msg or use N key, then in the preview
pane I see something like:

[57 lines]
Press Enter to retrieve this msg
Press M to mark for later retrieval.

I have to either double click on the post or use CTRL+N to get the msg
to open up in the preview pane. Not a biggie since I'm currently
double clicking to get thru the msgs; although the N key would have
been better.

One other item. Is there a way to turn off the line count? I don't
care that someone posted 2 lines, or 200 lines.

Roger. Right after sending this, I finally stumbled upon this in the
Window Menu. I went to all the other menus but just ignored this
one.

BTW Sorry, but I see that I accidently send some dupe msgs. This
was probably me and the timeout errors that I was getting. I wound
up redoing the posts not knowing they were still in the Outbox.

The error that I got with Agent was:

Sorry! An online error occurred.
Reason: Error reported by Server: 503 Program Error or Time Out.

This might be a server issue on my end. For some reason my internet
connection seems to go out when I'm in Email/WebBrowser/IM. It's
random. And it might last 2mins and reconnect.

But I seem to do fine if I'm in an online game like Joint Ops or
Counter Strike. I'm going to call RoadRunner and ask why something
like this would happen; especially for programs like Email and
Browser. LAN? Spyware?

Window/Outbox.

You can have them delete or not - I don't delete them, but since they
aren't part of the main view they don't clutter things up or use up
resources unless you specifically want to see them.
