So, I purchased a second hand Laptop from eBay, The MSI GX60-I got it this morning downloaded all the updates and set up my windows account. When I actually got to the desktop screen I downloaded Google Chrome then Speccy, I opened up Speccy to see that apparently, My CPU is running at over 130C and never goes below 110C.

I quickly downloaded CPUID and that confirmed that my Processor is indeed running at these temps.

I have no idea what step to take now. I didn't even know that a Laptop would exceed 100C without shutting itself down.

I've turn't off my Laptop, But Im afraid to turn it back on. Im also afraid I've damaged it already seeing as it took me about an hour or two to find out.

Laptop Specs -
MSI GX60
CPU - AMD A10-4600M
GPU - Radeon HD 7970M

any advice?

Solution
If the laptop is over 2 years old you will need to repaste the CPU with some new thermal compound like IC Diamond https://www.amazon.com/Innovation-Cooling-D... TIM. This solves 80% of overheating issues with laptops.

Update: The 80% number I completely made up but it's VERY likely to solve your issue. Over time, thermal paste dries up and no longer transfers heat to the heatsink like it should which causes overheating.

Mhm yeah, But Im still a little uneasy on the situation right now.

I've never had a Laptop before, Always gamed on Desktops. The Laptop bottom is fairly hot, And there is some hot air coming from the side. I'm not sure if this is normal or not...

I also just installed Coretemp, And it states that my CPU is running at 60c, Max 66c.

2 Programmes say that the CPU is over 100c, And one at 60c.

Im assuming I should just take those 2 readings as false seeing as my Laptop hasn't shut itself down yet?

Still require help if anybody has any ideas.

Almost sure something here is still very wrong.

Downloaded AMD Catalyst, And my PC got so hot that I thought it'd explode, Extremely loud also. Thermal Margin is now sitting at -20% And now my Temps on Coretemp have gone up to 100%.

Today I noticed that the Laptop has a fan booster, In which I can switch on and the Laptop will run at 50 Idle, But the temps still go up a lot when downloading / Browsing. Without the Booster, The laptop overheats like nothing which makes me think something is wrong here.

Coretemp and AMD Overdrive appear to be giving me better readings.

if thermail margin is - the cpu is over temp is throttling.

I wonder what they did to it. .

look at the case screws do they look like they have been pulled out before?(scratch marks and stuff)
look into the side cooling exhaust port does it look durty inside?

UPDATE -
So yesterday I quit trying to sort it as it was stressing me out.

Came back to it this morning and I slightly removed the bottom of the casing and had a look around (Couldn't remove anything else incase the I was to return it to the seller) and everything seemed OK, Bit of dust but nothing too bad. Fan seemed to be working fine also.

Now, I turnt on the Laptop and obviously still had the same issues, Only this time it started switching itself off within 10-15 minutes of it being on, Obviously due to overheating. After about 13 attempts, I managed to uninstall all the Graphic drivers (Integrated and dedicated) from the System and re-install them (Hardest bit due to power cutting) and it appeared to have fixed whatever was wrong with it. My PC Is no longer having these Loud then quiet Fan spasms, Hot air is no longer coming from my PC when idle, And the bottom doesn't feel like I could flip it over and use it as a frying pan.

On Speccy and a few other Temp softwares I still appear to be getting temps over 100c, Which I've ruled out as wrong. I know this as I've read people complaining about the same problem on the same CPU, For instance : http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2345011/amd-a10-4600m-temperature-problem.html (For anybody having the same issue) But on Coretemp and AMD Overdrive, I'm getting around 50c Idle, And up to 70-80c in game. These are the correct temps.

However, Im still a little concerned about my AMD Overdrive Thermal Margin though, When in game Im usually still -5 or -10, But when Idle I'm +15 to + 25, Does going - matter too much?

Also, I Believe I still need to download Drivers for the GX60 Laptop itself with But Im afraid if I download these updates (If any) Then It'll mess with my GPU Drivers again, And then I'll have to go through all this hassle again. I'd be downloading them with a Driver Utility, Linked to me by the Seller if I did download them.

Not only that, But the guy who sold me this Laptop has installed Windows 10 on this Machine, And after checking on MSI's website, They don't have Win10 GX60 Drivers for download. I've looked on forums, And people are saying that I would need to update my BIOS to get Win10 Drivers running properly, In which, I'd have to pass.

So if anybody could give me some advice on the Thermal Margin thing, And if I should attemp to install any drivers that the Utility would find for me, That'd be much appreciated.

Also, Thank you all for the suggestions and help. Much appreciated!

EDIT: @Faz, Once I'm satisfied that the Laptop functionality is as it should be, And sure I won't be returning it to the seller, I will be removing the Bottom of the case and will completely change the thermal compound. I just dont want to tamper with it too much while I'm still figuring out if theres any problems.

Are you saying that 50c Idle and 75-80c in game is bad still?

How hot should this processor be running at in game and idle?

No, those are normal temps for a gaming notebook.

Sorry for the late replies guys,
Been a bit busy for the past few days and havent been able to get on the PC as much as I'd like to check and reply to this thread.

Took the bottom of the Laptop today again (Properly) and the vents connected to both the CPU And GPU were completely blocked with god knows what. Looks like somebody took a chocolate bar and literally mashed it into them both. Anywho, Cleaned the vents out properly, Give the fan a good spray over with compressed air, Removed the CPU Fan and checked the CPU's thermal paste situation, Its still there, But the sides appear to be dry and only a small part of middle is still wet. After doing all of this, Turn't the Laptop on, And my Temps have dropped again dramatically, which Im really happy about.

Ordered some MX4 Paste from eBay, Also picked up some Rubbing Alcohol, Both should be delivered by Tuesday, Will throw that on And then hopefully all will be good from there on.

Again, Thanks for all the replies and help. Really appreciate it.
