Hello, I’ve just bought a second hand GPU (it was an upgrade) I’ve bought a Radeon R9 290X.

I plugged my HDMI cable in and instantly there were vertical blue lines, I thought “I just need to download the drivers. When I downloaded the drivers (before installing them) the screen went grey and I ended up turning my PC off at the plug, and rebooting, however I only got to the windows screen before I met the same grey screen with graphical glitches throughout. Please help, my hardware is:

Gigabyte GA-F2A78M-HD2
AMD Athlon X4 FM2+
Torosus SATA3 SSD 120GB
Radeon R9 290X 4GB
2 X 4GB HyperX Ram

Sounds like it's dead or you have to small of a power supply 290x takes quite a bit of power. At load it can pull 350+ watts
I’ve got a Corsair CW500 (500 watts) does this seem like too small a PSU?
It shouldn’t be dead as I bought it from a reputable shop, and when I plugged it in it worked with the blue lines for around 5 minutes

Those blue lines are a strong indication something is/was dying. It should provide a normal display even when using default Windows drivers.

when you say “something” is dying what are you implying? If you mean the GPU is dying that’s a possibility as I purchased it second hand from a shop today, however the rest of my hardware hasn’t shown any signs of death up to this point. Is there any chance that plugging in this graphics card has fried the card/any of my hardware?

I mean the gpu. From what you describe I think it’s very unlikely there will be damage to other components. The only other possibility that comes to mind is a faulty psu that damaged the gpu but again seems unlikely.

As far as the power supply, maybe the card isn’t getting enough juice. If the card can draw 350 watts on a 500 watt power supply that has likely been in the system a while, plus adding in the other components, and given the fact that power supplies become less powerful the older they get, I’d say that it’s very possible the power supply is struggling to deliver enough juice.

I used to have a socket am3 athlon x4 and it was ok for what it was but I don’t know how a 290x would have paired with it as those were beastly cards in their day. But with blue lines you may need to see what the shop’s warranty is and return it for a more energy efficient card. Even if you swapped power supplies I’d be suspicious of that card I think.
