putting older RAM in newer laptop

I have a laptop with 4GB of ram in it but want to upgrade to 8gb. I have an old laptop with a 4gb ddr3 stick in it and the laptop I'm currently using uses ddr3. I think that they can be used together but I'm unsure. Would I be able to use them together. If you need more info, I'm happy to give it

EDIT: I have just looked at that again and they are different pc3-xxxx numbers. Does this matter at all?

They should work together yes. Does your laptop mobo support dual channel memory ?

not your processor mate, your motherboard must support it. What is the model of your laptop
