Hey all,

I've been piecing together my first gaming PC (actually my first custom PC of any kind) and below is what I've come up with so far.

Case:
Thermaltake Urban S31 - Window Black € 87,60
CPU:
Intel Core i5-6500 € 209,80
GPU:
Asus GeForce GTX 970 - Strix DirectCU II OC - 4GB GDDR5 € 358,80
Mobo:
Asus Z170 PRO GAMING € 149,80
RAM:
Crucial Ballistix Sport - DDR4 2400Mhz CL16 Kit - 8GB € 55,80
Drives:
Crucial BX100 - 250GB € 86,10
Western digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200rpm SATA 6Gb/s 64MB € 54,80
LG GH24NSC0 DVD-RW € 17,80
Power supply:
Seasonic S12II-620Bronze € 73,80
OS:
Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64bit € 102,40

Total price: around €1250, which is my budget for this project :)

Like I said, it's primarily a gaming rig, but it'll also be used for work and hobby related stuff, but nothing that would require an i7 CPU.

For now I am not planning on overclocking, but in the future I might decide to overclock and/or add a 2nd GPU in SLI (+ some cooling of course).

Did I overlook anything? Is there perhaps something in this build that I could/should swap out for another (better/cheaper) part? Any constructive advice and/or tips would be apreciated.

I am not very technical (I'll be getting help from a friend putting this stuff together in the end) so be gentle if I don't get what you're saying or don't explain myself very well :)

Thanks in advance for your help!

Solution
PSU is not good quality. Change to Antec, XFX, Seasonic, EVGA (G2,B2,GS)

If this is for gaming, you want to get a better GPU for a system like this. The expensive CPU/motherboard are pointless when you won't even be able to fully use them.

Do you plan to overclock your CPU? You are paying more money for an unlocked CPU (indicated by the "k" at the end) and Z170 motherboard. If going with a fourth generation Haswell is significantly cheaper, I would go that route and spend more money on the GPU. The difference between Haswell and Skylake is marginal in terms of performance.

Your PSU is mediocre in build quality. Uses cheap Chinese CapXon capacitors rated at 30C and would not fair well i a gaming computer. You will want a good PSU to power your system, look into a unit by Antec, Seasonic, XFX, EVGA (B2, G2, GS), and Super Flower.

Thanks for the replies. I'll look into a different PSU. For now I'm not planning on overclocking anytime soon (as I said in my original post), although I'd like to keep that option open. Haswell and Skylake processors aren't that far apart in price where I am and since I'm building from scratch I figured I'd rather pay a little bit more now than a lot more down the road. (I tried coming up with a similar Haswell build and it would only cost me about €50-60 less.)

Edit:

Okay, I've been looking around and I made the following changes (I'll also add these to my list in my first post):

I swapped out the Cooler Master PSU for a Seasonic PSU (S12II-620)

I also decided to upgrade the GPU to a GTX 970 and downgraded the i5 6600k to an i5 6500. I'll lose the choice to overclock at a later time, but I think the better GPU makes up for this.

Any other suggestions or advice for my build?
