Greetings all,
I'm wondering if anyone here can give me some ideas or suggestions about what to do about an issue I'm having with my gaming rig. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
The issue: After booting up normally, the PC operates fine and fast for approximately five minutes. Suddenly, I then get a massive spike of slowness, almost like lag, when I perform any function. Opening and closing windows takes 20-30 seconds, typing a single letter in the Start menu "Run" bar takes four seconds or so. The computer basically becomes unbearably slow for around 10-20 minutes. Then, suddenly, it goes back to normal. I know 15 minutes of unusable slowness is not a critical issue, but it's incredibly annoying.
Specs:
Intel i7 4790K
32GB Kingston RAM
Samsung 256GB SSD + ADATA 256GB SSD + Toshiba 2TB HDD
2x Nvidia GTX970 GPUs
MSI Z97-G45 Mobo
Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Some context: It had been running great for approximately 18 months prior to this. The issue started two days ago, after a recent power outage (not sure if the issue is related, as I have a good surge protector/filter).
A list of the various things I've already tried:
- Booted in Safe Mode. Issue DOES NOT occur during Safe Mode at all.
- Updated graphics drivers
- Installed Windows updates
- Ran a full security scan with Trend Micro Premium and Roguekiller
- Ran HWinfo — report seems to indicate no hardware issues
- Ran RealTemp — PC operates at 28-32 degrees even throughout slowness
- Ran Tweaking.com's Windows Repair, twice — no effect
- Ran Wise Disk Cleaner – no effect
- Ran CrystalDiskInfo – all hard drives are "healthy"
- Ran Windows Troubleshooter and removed unnecessary processes from opening on startup
- Cleaned fans with compressed air
- Re-seated CMOS battery
- Re-seated RAM
- Re-seated both GPUs
I'm really at a loss about what to do next, or even if the issue is software or hardware based — I really would prefer not to do a complete factory reset, if possible.
Any ideas and suggestions would be hugely appreciated!
