Q550L Only Registers One RAM Stick?

Hi everybody.
I recently got an ASUS Q550L Laptop, and it came with one 4GB stick of RAM. So I bought a second RAM stick for it, and put it in it. But then it didn't pick up the second stick. And on my attempts to reseat the RAM in opposite slots results in the working stick not being picked up at all in the top SODIMM stick. With none of the sticks registering.
Is a SODIMM slot dead? Or is the RAM not working? They are both the same size and nearly the same timings.

Your problem is most likely the off timings and different modules.

So take out the original and put another one of the ones you just bought and it should work, because they are the same modules and timings.

Heres the interesting thing though, when I put took the RAM stick I knew was working out of the bottom, and put just the new one in the bottom, it refused to boot at all, even into BIOS.

How much ram is in the second stick?

4GB exactly. The first stick runs 11-11-F3, while the second one runs 11-12-F3. Using just the new 11-12-F3 results in the system refusing to boot.

Maybe the system only supports 11-11-F3? Try going into the bios and changing them to XMP

or, put the original in, change to XMP then put the other in?

I'm in the BIOS now, I booted with the 4GB of RAM, but where would the settings for XMP be? I've looked through all of the settings and there isn't anything for XMP.

Or anything for RAM for that matter.

Hmm... Interesting. It might just be the timings, if you want, you can buy RAM with the same timings.

Otherwise, do you REALLY need the extra 4gb of RAM? What do you need it for?

Because I'm trying to sell it, and it's hard to convince anyone that a 4GB model of an 8GB laptop is worth anything to them.

So is the laptop so picky that it requires a specific timing?

Probably so, a lot of the time the factories don't think you'll bother upgrading the laptop, so set everything to be pretty picky.
