Q6600 and Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro

Right, iv been looking at building myself a new pc in the summer after my exam results, and am looking at getting a oem q6600 and a Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro as it works out about the same as retail price. Just wondering, how easy is it to overclock this CPU as iv never overclocked before, and will this cooler be sufficient. And if so how far will i be able to overclock it without any playing about with scary stuff like voltages?, and ill probs be buying a gigabyte p45 board with max fsb 1600 and some ocz reaper ram 800mhz cl4.

Ill post up a review if you like, im planning on gettin 3.2 outa the CPU, but i have to admit the Freezer 7 pro is massive lol i was supprized. I brought it as ive heard it great for overclocking, we will find out 2moz 😛 haha

By the way the p45 is a fantastic board, the layout is sweet.. easly accessable and really high quality. It only has an 8x by 8x CF mode, but i will still CF onit. Its a great board for budget overclocking id highly recommend it!

Nope it just is not, and here's why.

This is the number that you want to beat.
Thermal Resistance: 0.17°C/Watt
Anything higher is a waste of your money.
If this number is not given, move along.

Oh by the way this is from the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, $32 retail.

Everyone yells Zalman Zalman Zalman, well guess what I don't find any Thermal Resistance information on thier
web site or in the coolerss manuals. They are over priced anyways.

$10 for .01 Degrees C/W at best a cooling of 2 Degrees C, to me it's not worth the hassle of install and expense.

Scythe SCINF-1000 120mm CPU Cooler Thermal Resistance unknown price higher than prior units of know capability.

Tuniq Tower 120 P4 & K8 CPU Cooler
Thermal Resistance 0.16 - 0.21 °C / W from web site, $57.58 delivered.
Again over priced and a pain in the ass installation.

Bang for buck winner here, the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro.
Why bother with anything else?

XIGMATEK has a new unit out the Xigmatek Achilles S1284 for $45 before shipping.
Thermal Resistance 0.14°C/Watt
This may be the new big boy on the block.

With installation of the XIGMATEK' being so problematic and it almost requires the extra mounting bracket,
at a cost of an additional $10. I might still go with the Freezer 7 Pro.

When Xigmatek includes the extra mounting bracket in the box. I will give the newer cooler, the Achilles S1284 a try.

Xigmatek Achilles S1283 center rods are offset and do not make 100% contact with the processor.

I would still go with the Xigmatek over the Freezer 7 Pro.
I wouldn't let a $10 bracket be the determining factor.

This is my first build and I have my Q6600 @ 3.0GHz without raising any voltages. My VID is 1.325. I'm also using the Xigmatek SD-964 which does fine for my use. I should have bought the 1283 as it would have performed a little better. Just make sure whatever cooler you decide on fits.

Also, the Kingwin Inc. coolers are almost identical to the Xigmatek and might save you a little money. What ever you decide on, don't skimp on the cooler for a Q6600. It's a great chip, but it can get hot when stressed.

P.S. I didn't have any trouble installing my Xigmatek. Just do a little reading online for tips. I really like the rubber fan mounts and didn't have a problem with them other than being able to see which slot to slide them into.
 
I have OCed my Q6600 to 3.375GHz (FSB 375MHz) without raising any voltages. It runs at 35C and shoots up to 45-50 when under load. I used a Zalman 9500 and it was a complete mistake as that thing is big, and have ended up running it at its slowest speed anyway. It also has only 3 pins which means the motherboard cannot control its speed - you have to do it by hand. I am sure a standard cooler would have sufficed and would have 4 pins. I have switched the massive 25 cm case fan off to see the difference and it was only 5-7 degrees under load, nothing much.
 
Ive had a horrible experience with the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 on my Q6600. I idle at 40-45c @ 3.0ghz (1.3V, stock VID). Reseated the piece of crap about 15 times with little difference. I got some good help up here from Lup, but after a few days the heating issue came right back. I even took the cooler to work and got the base checked on a level scale, its fine. The processor IHS isnt concave either. My piece of garbage ASUS V-60 was giving me better results, 100% aluminum with a half working 80mm fan inside.

I know the Xigmatek has given people good experiences but I wouldnt waste time with it mrplow, these HDT coolers just arent worth the hype. Stick with the AC7 or basically anything with a flat base. Im going to order an AC7 this weekend and test it out, only $27 so not a big deal.

Why don't you RMA the S1283 back to whoever you bought it from or Xigmatek. It sounds like you received a lemon, but that doesn't mean that all HDT coolers are bad.

Although I'm new to this, so far I have had very good luck with writing hardware companies to get problems solved. Of course I'm very subtle in what I'm trying to accomplish. I've had to deal with Antec, MSI, and have even wrote Xigmatek and all have been helpful.

P.S. Could it be that the gases in the S1283 heatpipes have escaped? That's assuming that there are gases in the heatpipes.
 

The working fluid is kept in a vaccume. There is liquid inside the heat pipe. The liquid heats then vaporizes and then condenses.
 
Go with the xigmatek s1283, or the Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer(if you can find one). Don't listen to Bobbknight's BS. Reading thermal resistance numbers given by a manufacturer is one step farther than retarded. That's just a stupid number that doesn't mean crap.

The ONLY reason to go with the freezer pro 7 is if a larger HSF won't fit in your case. I used a freezer pro 7 on a q6600 for a while, then switched to an s1283. About a 10c difference under load....that's alot. Any of the "top coolers" listed on frostytech will do for you really, just pick one that's inexpensive, and will fit.

As for the "push pin issue", installing them is really quite easy. And if you have problems with the xigmatek, you'll have the same probs with the freezer pro 7, they have the exact same pushpins. I replaced mine however with some screws, nuts, and rubber washers I picked up at the hardware store for ~$2.00.

@3.6ghz my q6600 would push over 70c with the freezer pro, but maxes out in the @~60c with the xigmatek.

p.s. why would you name yourself after bobby knight. He's the biggest asshat ever in college sports.
 

It still might be worth contacting Xigmatek if you still have your invoice. Who knows, they might even give you something for all your trouble. Anyways, good luck with whatever you decide.
