my question, I've been looking at cheap temporary replacements for a PC since my a8 6500 apu hp PC died on me about 2 weeks ago, and I've been looking at really old processors like the q6600. will the q6600 or other CPU that fits in a lga 775 motherboard do for my needs of basic to mediocre 1080p video encoding and recording games (using nvidia shadowplay) for the time being before I retire the CPU into my collection (fact- I have an old pentium 3 from 1999) and upgrade to more powerful used parts.

Not with anything above CS:GO.

i've seen a lot of older stuff going for sale on ebay recently, quite cheap, im just debating wether its worth it to take the plunge to get the first generations of i5 or i7.

I guess it depends. you've listed your budget. Now specify what parts you have and what parts you need.
