Q6600 Overclocking

I have a new computer built by a friend and I will eventually be overclocking my cpu. I will soon (hopefully) be ordering a new gpu (GTX260/280 55nm?) and will also be ordering a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 cooler. I have a MSI P6N SLI Platinum mobo. I have recently played around with overclocking my current 8600GT, but I have no experience with overclocking cpu's. I just read Tom's article on 'Overclocking:...E6750...or Q6600...' and some mention was made to 'Go Stepping' but nothing specfic to 'how to'. I also came across an article 'Overclocking Guide' publlished by Tom's in 1997 and I was wondering if that article is still relevent to what I need to know to do a sucessful overclock. It looks like I will go up to 3.0GHz to keep the voltage increase minimum, so I guess I just need to find a good 'how to' article to walk me through the steps assuming the 1997 article is no longer relevent to my specific configuration.
