So I have an amd radeon 7950 with a q6600. (ik it bottlenecks like crazy)... even when I change the settings the fps doesent change. I got the pc for super cheap, and was planning on upgrading the cpu in the future. and i am doing that now. I am looking into buying a modded xeon processor on ebay that is identical performance to the q9650... Will this upgrade help reduce this problem that I have with the fps not changing in the settings.

Solution
You don't necessarily need a Z87 to overclock a G3258.

You can find H87,H81 and H85 boards for well under $60 that will do the job. A good place to look or ask for a potential trade would be any of the following.

The q9650 is 3Ghz and a newer generation over the q6600's 2.5GHz. Xeon procs of the era are LGA771, not directly compatible with LGA775 boards. You will need to modify the socket for the xeon to fit, apply a shim to remap a few pins (this may be what's modded), and may need a specialized BIOS in order to run the Xeon. You should be able to find a q9650 for cheaper than the Xeon, and that will have much less issues, at most a BIOS update.

The modded xeon has that pin mod done to it... its on ebay. here is the link $50 CAD.

I think for that Cheap I may as well try it.

It would be easier to over clock the q6600. you can get most of them to 3.0ghz easy. Also the per clock performance increase over previous generations is usually no more then 10 percent. That is a q6600 vs a q9650 at 3.0 isn't gonig to be more then 10 percent boost. So no. Your better off saving your money for a real upgrade.

Looking at the link, have you confirmed with your seller that your mobo is compatible? If so, you will still need to modify your socket to fit, but that would be the only hassle beyond a possible BIOS update.

That is a very tempting price, and the seller goes out of the way to insure compatibility, I'm impressed. My curiosity is now quite piqued.

If you do this, please reply back with your results.

Q6600 is quite easy to run at 3.6-4.0 Ghz on overclocking capable boards with adequate cooling.

I agree, shopping around for Q9550 and up is better then relying on someone else's mod. BIOS picture of the processor running a computer is the minimum I think for buying used processors.

Q6600's some of them are stable up to 5ghz for whatever reason not many other LGA775 chips will do this.

Q6600 Ebay $30 or under
2.4ghz
1066MHz FSB Supports 1066mhz DDR2
2 x 4MB L2 Cache
Voltage 0.85V – 1.5V

Q9550 "$58 StarMicro or $50 for a Q9650 Ebay"
2.83 GHz
1333 MHz FSB Supports 1333mhz DDR3
2 x 6 MB L2 Cache
Voltage 0.85V-1.3625V

So @ Stock Speeds you have around a 10% speed increase with the mhz increase, Faster Bus and Faster RAM. Once you overclock the CPU, RAM and Bus that benefit will be as much as 35%.

Now if you really want to see what LGA775 can do grab a Xeon X5460 3.16GHz Quad-Core CPU "$50 Ebay" If you have a motherboard that can support it they overclock easy to 4.1ghz and Run the same as a I7-950 overclocked to the Same Speed. Q9XXX chips alone still are very good Overclocked in Gaming if you can run them and for around $50 it is a good deal.

If you Lack Overclocking then you really are missing the major Benefits of the CPU upgrade, moving to a Q9XXX or Xeon with the LGA771 adapter will only net you the difference in Mhz and L2 Cache and increased Bus speed. You will see a gain but it wont be much.

Here is a little Info on LGA771 CPU's converted to LGA775 Motherboards.

I think I am just going to sell my motherboard ram an cpu and use that money to upgrade to a z87 + g3258 + 8gb ddr3 ram... I should be able to sell my lga 775 setup for $80, then for about $120 I can get the z87 setup used on craigslist. basically a $40 upgrade
