Q9650 vs X4 760K

Which is better in terms of overall cpu performance and single core performance too.
I read around the net that they are about equal,is that true?

Not entirely true or false. In terms of Raw speed yes the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650(3.0Ghz) is faster than the Athlon 760K(3.8-4.1Ghz) even at their respective clock speed. Many benchmarks would favor the older Core 2 Q9650. Clock for Clock it the gap is even bigger. THough the Athlon II 760K does have Nwer Instruction sets and architecture that is more efficient than the Core 2 Quad. Also the Core 2 Quad is not a true Quad Core as it is basically two Core 2 duo dies on on Chip.(MCM) I could go on but i don't know if this is close to what you're looking for..

The Athlon 760K by far. You get modern chipset motherboards, DDR3, USB3 etc..... Why buy something that is grossly outdated like a socket 775 rig?

I would also agree for the Athlon II 760K or 750k is fine too. The feature set is much better and cheaper for the Athlon II 760K FM2/FM2+ motherboards are not that expensive. Though Finding a Decent LGA 775 motherboard can be tricky now. Especially if you want to get a good overclock and have more features and even then The 3 or 4 LGA775 Chipsets that do support DDR3 have not do great Memory performance and DDR2 is really expensive now. Do you have either one of the SKUs?

Totally agree with all of you, also a used C2Q is around the price of a new 760k, you can get a good FM2+ motherboard for $70-$80, and cheap ones are around $40-$50, they're great budget systems really, but you cant upgrade to a significant better cpu, 760k and 860k are the top performers there.

I currently own an LGA 775 mobo with 4GB DDR2 RAM on it but it also supports DDR3 RAM http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/P45TurboTwins2000/
I was wondering if it worth to get a used Q9650 or upgrading to FM2+ mobo+760K+4GB RAM.

If you already have a 775 board try to get a good deal on ebay, C2Q are around $80-$100 bucks.

At that price I would for sure save and get an FM2+ rig. As most of us have already told the op. I wouldn't spend a dime on a socket 775 rig.

FM2+ cpus are newer and slightly better, but upgrading to a FM2+ rig would not be a significant upgrade, a good upgrade would be a i5, i3, or a fx 6300/8320.

If you can find an Core 2 Duo E8400 or E8500 for cheap or a Core 2 Q6600,6700 or Q9650 though the are hard to find., and even more hard is the QX9650 aside from someone trying to sell it for what they paid back in 08. YOu have got a decent Motherboard for overclocking. A core 2 E8500 or E8400 is going to offer a decent experience and you that way could save up. An Athlon 750K really does not hold that much of a gap over the Core 2 platform in CPU performance and none in single-threaded performance. aside from cinebench 10. If you have a Core 2 Duo E6700, E6750 those two can be effortlessly oc'd. The E8500 can hit over 4.0GHz on Air setups. If You can hold out for a bit and save some pennies then Your options for a New PC have more than doubled.
