QHD (2560x1440) and 120Hz, worth it and what GPU handles it?

Hey guys,

Gonna be building a desktop for myself mostly for some games (don't play too much nowadays though, no FPS), lots of coding (desktop space a plus), some photoshop/video editing.

I'm for certain going to use a AMD FX 8350 OC'd to 4.8Ghz (maybe more) as my processor: great process power for the price and great overclocking ability.

I've been eying those Korean QHD, 120Hz, IPS, 6ms response time, 27" monitors up on eBay. My friend bought one (Yamakasi Catleap), and he loves it. I'm a little hesitant since I've never heard of these companies before, but those specs for that price ($300-450) is pretty sweet..

My biggest question is, what kind of GPU would I need to couple with my processor in order to be able to benefit from such a monitor? I know going from HD to QHD takes tons of additional processor power, and there's not much point to a 120Hz monitor if I can't hit 100-120fps and stuck at 60fps in games (mouse scrolling would still be nice looking though, heh).

Given the price of high end GPUs, and that I don't even play all too many games nowadays (some LoL, some Civ 5, the random odd game here and there), and that I'll be doing a lot of coding, I'm thinking just getting 2 IPS (need IPS for designing), HD, 60Hz might be better for my needs? It'd cost around the same, plus I don't have to spend a huge chunk of $ for a high-end GPU.

Sorry for presenting so many questions, haha, but I guess it goes along something like this:
1) Can my processor + any gpu handle a QHD 120Hz monitor and maintain a high FPS (waste of money if it can't..)?
2) If not, what's the better option: 27" 120Hz HD or 27" 60Hz QHD?
3) For you coders out there, do you recommend 2 27" or do you think 2 23" is enough?

I really appreciate solid responses! Thanks for any help and suggestions!

Solution
1. Probably, for you needs, a 270X will do fine. Anything better will be bottlenecked during gaming
2. QHD is really good. I wouldn't get a 27" without it.
3.

Just as a side note, you may want a 16:10 screen instead of 16:9. the extra height is great for Browsing/coding.

Though since you're going to get a QHD screen, with a possibility of more demanding games, I see no harm in getting a 280 or something. At least then you'd definitely know what to upgrade when your computer feels slow. For the IPS panels, do check out the 60 Hz, 5 - 8 ms panels from ASUS, samsung, BenQ or some other reputable manufacturer, and always check the reviews.
