Hi, Can some of you share as many thoughts and links to which I am of need of putting this together:

I am a Chess Teacher and want to reduce some time in roll taking and make it fun for students as well ... thus here is simple plan.

1. Note some of if not most students are K ~ 6th thus they do NOT have cell phones otherwise so easy to do this, however its still easy I feel I just like extra ideas please as you guys have help me solve some neat stuff before and or have added great thoughts and ideas, that said here is plan:

2. I will print out QR Codes with students data etc per each QR ... thus I will laminate and give to them a cool Chess Class ID ... the part that I am not used to or have used is the scanner ... what is a good scanner for this that will dump my data into excel or somewhere to which I can pull a attendance report every month?

3. Of course any thoughts or ideas I am missing to automate attendance woudl be greatly appreciative, I almost want set up face recognition on our security cam but that's to much to configure at the moment and thus I just want start off simple plus again the students will like having little ID :)

This will really help me as taking roll in my class is not a sit down and lets take roll as I have students coming and going at different times and we are moving fast and doing a lot in the class that roll simple takes over ten minutes ... this is huge for us to not have to do.

Any suggestions will be great please ...

Thank you kindly ~

Obvious thing would be an old cell phone, with USB power and no SIM card.

If you get really "serious" about this you could eventually switch to a cheap light gun and barcodes on the ids like my climbing gym has at the door for members. :)

Scans in like half a second every time. That's my frustration with QRs - can be very hit or miss, depends a lot on the quality of the camera / software / focus speed / lighting conditions. None of those issues with barcodes and a dedicated scanner.

In agreement with barcode versus QR.

After giving it all more thought and a bit of googling there are lots of options.

Broad and somewhat subjective criteria being free, easy, simple.... :)

You can use Excel to generate barcodes.

You can use a webcam to read and capture barcodes.

Not so sure about the required attendance reports but very likely straightforward within Excel.

FYI "sampling":

I found quite a number of viable links, And of course you could use Google Forms etc. in much the same way.

I would break the project into three parts:

1) Generating the barcodes for each student putting their name, grade, chess ranking, etc. into a Student table.

2) Reading and recording the barcodes via webcam as each student enters class - including a timestamp into an Attendance table. May be more problematic if the students are scanning themselves in....

3) Creating the necessary reports from the Student table and the Attendance table using the recorded barcode scans.

Sort of a fun project I think.
