From what I've seen, the picture quality is great for these trinitron tubes but people seem to HATE the 2 lines. Does anyone have link to a picture of it? I'm curious how bad it is. From what I've read the only other option is Shadow Mask tubes but from what I've read, they aren't as good. My only other option would be a LCD screen but since I want one for both gaming and graphics I'm not sure if I can find a 19" that fits the bill. From what I've seen they're either good for games OR graphics. I have a 19" SynchMaster 900p atm and I'd never go down to a 17", even for a LCD.

Anyone able to sort through this mess?? LOL

Also, any word on new tubes in the works that solve the 2 line problem? Sounds like a serious design flaw to me... I'd hate to buy a new monitor only to have something new come out the next month that fixes the problem.

The two lines on the Trinitron and Diamondtron tubes are about the equivalent of 1 pixel at maximum resolution. They aren't distinctive but they are clearly visible.

Shadow mask tubes can and do deliver picture quality every bit as good as the aperture grille tubes, but they aren't quite as bright... which, if you think about it, isn't really a problem. Unless you like staring into a 60 watt lightbulb you'll probably end up turning the contrast down in either case.

I am going to go out on a limb and make a prediction about new CRT designs...

I don't think you'll see a lot of them... 16x9 is coming as is high definition television, both of these pose real problems to CRT designers as it's almost impossible to maintain focus across a screen that wide. Soon enough it will all be next generation LCD and plasma displays. the prices will drop dramatically as sales increase. The CRT is 100 year old technology that can now be easily replaced by something far surperior, cooler and more compact and I doubt you'll see much ambition to keep it alive.

As for the CRT == Gaming and LCD == business, you will also see that barrier breaking down as LCD response times are improved with each new model introduced. They're already more than good enough for most computer uses and the final gaming problem --smearing-- will also soon be a thing of the past.
