Quad Core OK?

Hi, I have a GA-M61PME-S2, and I was wondering if it would be at all possible to install a quad core phenom in this board. I really would like it if i could, because this is a plex server, and 2 more cores definitely would help.

depends on the socket to what it supports. most likely you have am2 socket which does not support phenom cpu's

But on the product page it says AMD Phenom support

As long as it is socket AM2, it will happily fit in the motherboard - that includes the AMD Phenom processors

what page are you looking at? this one http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2755#ov only shows athlon and sempron support. but the cpu list includes a lot more than am2 chips so maybe one would work in it.

Looks like it supports the 95w Phenom chips. It will not support the 125w versions though. The page Math Geek linked shows exactly what's supported and what BIOS version is necessary for that support.

The 95w version of the Phenom II X4 955 is the best CPU supported by that motherboard. BIOS version F5B is necessary.

No, that is a 125w part. I had to google the model number in the picture to be sure.

My bad, good catch Anort3, I didn't check the BIOS version (doesn't really make sense to list CPUs that aren't supported 😉 )

All Gigabyte boards are listed like that. All I've used in my personal builds since the early 2000s so I'm familiar with their site over any other manufacturers.

To be clear Gigabyte says you can't use 125w CPUs. If it's not on that list you can't use it. 😉
