Hi, I have a GA-M61PME-S2, and I was wondering if it would be at all possible to install a quad core phenom in this board. I really would like it if i could, because this is a plex server, and 2 more cores definitely would help.

Looks like it supports the 95w Phenom chips. It will not support the 125w versions though. The page Math Geek linked shows exactly what's supported and what BIOS version is necessary for that support.

No it doesn't. Look at the necessary BIOS revision. N/A.

No, that is a 125w part. I had to google the model number in the picture to be sure.

The motherboard can't supply that much power.

My bad, good catch Anort3, I didn't check the BIOS version (doesn't really make sense to list CPUs that aren't supported 😉 )

All Gigabyte boards are listed like that. All I've used in my personal builds since the early 2000s so I'm familiar with their site over any other manufacturers. :)

One more question. Some of you have said that I cannot use 125w CPUs. Why is this?

To be clear Gigabyte says you can't use 125w CPUs. If it's not on that list you can't use it. 😉
