Is K4000 3GB really worth the extra ~500$? Also, wouldn't 4GB be better than 3GB? Is there a place where GTX and Quadros have been compared for different things?

I'd be using these programs for mostly hobby/learning:
Maya/3DsMax and Unity
Abode CS6 Flash, Photoshop, After Effects
For gaming I'm not concerned with ultra settings/high fps. I'm mostly looking for something that will be fairly fast for rendering animation and decent for after effects / post production stuff.

Quadro drivers are optimized for 3ds Max, and it has floating point double precision for more accurate rendering. Having said that, is it worth the extra $500? No way, since you stated this is for hobby/learning. Only for truly professional product applications would I suggest the extra investment. And yes, the VRAM amount is important. FYI, Nvidia has disclosed that only 3.5GB of the GTX 970 VRAM is accessed as a "primary partition". The other 0.5GB is accessed as needed and at a much slower speed. It's still more that the Quadro, but it's worth noting in case you start comparing other cards (e.g., GTX 980, 980Ti).
