Quake 1 sites and Q1 Map sites?

Howdy,

It's been a long long time since I've played Q1 and I'm looking
for pointers to web sites with the updated versions of the old Quake 1
engine if there's some reasonable differences and folks have a strong
preference for one particular flavor of the updated stuff. I'm asking
as I'm looking at hosting an 'old school' LAN party in the near future
and would like some pointers from folks in the know about the current
state of things in Q1. It's been so long I'm not sure if there'll be
problems with trying to run Q1 on a much newer system - like will the
game run so fast it's unplayable, etc? (I can remember getting a
'screaming' Pentium 133 and a 4 meg Dimond Monster video card just to
play Q1.)

Also - I long ago lost my collection of Q1 maps - is there
anyplace that has a decent archive? (I miss Stomped.com - they had some
damn cool maps and mods.) In fact pretty much all the old map review
sites (like Talon's) I knew are long gone. Any suggestions and
pointers in this area will also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Myrmidon

Hi Myrmidon,
You probably want to use a quake source port for playing such as glquake
or xquake. There are better ones that those I listed, but I just haven't
used them. When using glquake, don't forget to rename the opengl32.dl in
your quake directory.

Other source port info is available here:

As far as maps go, look here:

Have fun!

This is a package that includes a number of useful utilities and add-ons as
well as some popular DM maps, on top of probably the best and most
up-to-date still-in-development QW replacement, FuhQuake (which also works
for single player)

And no Q1 fragfest is complete without CTF with the _classic_
grappling hook that hangs onto your enemy even when he's out
of sight, as you listen to his life ebbing away. . .just the thing for
those late-night campouts in the window overlooking the
causeway outside the base. . .
