quake 3 arena benchmark

dear all,

i'm a newbie in computer and interested in benchmarking computer. may i know step-by-step how to benchmark in quake 3 arena? i know that in tom's website has stated command line like this:

Quake III Arena Retail Version 1.16
command line = +set cd_nocd 1 +set s_initsound 0
Graphics detail set to 'Normal'
Benchmark using 'Q3DEMO1'

but, where should i type this command? fyi, i've never played the game before.
and last, is q3 arena and quake 3 the same game? or it's just an expansion pack or something?

q3 is q3 arena. There is an expansion pack available called q3 team arena but i personally think that pack is a bit dodgy.

An easy way to run a benchmark is to start up q3, once in the menu screen press ` which will bring up a console where you can type commands. type in 'timedemo 1' without the quote marks.
press ` again to put the console away. then click on demos. choose a demo.
the demo will run at the fastest speed possible whilst showing all of the frames. It time itself.

Once the demo ends, bring up the console again by pressing `

it should show the number of frames played, how long it took and work out the framerate for you.

before type timedemo 1? thank you
