Hello, as the title suggests, my wireless network card has a terrible range. It cannot connect to my wifi downstairs, where as my laptop's can easily, and any other device. I have a Qualcomm Atheros AR9287.
I want lots of things. Many of them I don't get. Having a WIFI receiver buried inside your desktop case (shielded) that works well is one of those things that you just won't get...
Your laptop has an antenna in the lid (usually). Where are the antenna(s) for this card? Buried behind the computer? Maybe you need a network card with external antenna(s) that you can move for best signal.
Has the strength and signal always been like that? If not, the card may need replacing.
You can also look for more high quality cards online to replace that one in your pc.
You may also try reinstalling the drivers for it

You should try powerline networking and not use WIFI for a desktop. Ethernet cable is best and powerline is next. A MIMO AV2 powerline pair like these -- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156493
