I have an Acer Aspire E 15 Laptop which I got for Christmas. At first everything ran great. I had to wait for Windows to do a bunch of super long updates and then bam I was good to go. I downloaded Steam as well as a few games and could play them perfectly (although they were all offline games). Two days later I downloaded a few online ones and my connection was smooth. Then things went downhill.
The first thing that happened was I got a yellow triangle which stated that I was connected, but no internet access. I clicked on view available networks and something disturbing happened; xfinitywifi was changed to xfinidywifi and on my custom named network that was listed, the R's were changed to B's and instead of wifi it shows gifi. I was very confused, but didn't have time to react as it all shut down with the monitor and red x logo stating I no longer had internet. Immediately, I restarted my computer and was met with a lovely blue screen. I can't remember exactly the code but it was something along the lines of a thread not where it was supposed to be or something, and when I looked it up the description was a failing or corrupted hardware. The blue screen goes away, and I have wifi again. The names of the networks are normal again and I proceed to go back onto Steam and play a game with multiplayer. About 3 minutes in, my adapter loses connection, and can only find "xfinidywifi", my own connection nowhere to be seen. I restart again, get internet back, and 2 minutes later it happens again. Frustrated, I diagnose the connection and windows offers to uninstall and reinstall my adapter and I say yes. Doesn't work. I manually change the settings such as aggressiveness and wireless mode and such and nothing changes. Then it GETS WORSE. All of a sudden my adapter now gets a Code 10, and cannot start period. I go online and find a driver- newer than the one installed- and install it. Nothing changes. It has gone from (presumably) working fine, to working for 2 minutes, to a permanent Code 10. I am at my wits end and do not know what to do.
I have also rolled back my version of windows and used automatic update on my adapter, both with no changes. I am currently using an old dualband usb adapter and it worked instantaneously and I haven't had a single disconnection, but the fact that I JUST got this computer and that having a wired usb adapter hanging off my computer is so frustrating.
UPDATE: Windows did an essential security update or something like that and forced me to restart my computer. Every time I boot my computer I go into device manager to check if my adapter is working yet and it no longer has a code 10. I will be testing if it is actually working soon. this is right after my roll back of windows and uninstalling all updates. The driver it is currently using is also the one I manually installed from an unofficial qualcomm driver site which is supposed to be the most recent Windows 10 version, version 12.0.0.428.
UPDATE: The Qualcomm adapter still does not work. After about 2 hours in, the adapter shut off. I went into the device manager and it had disabled itself. When I tried to enable it, it refused. I restarted my computer and got another blue screen which said driver power state failure.
