Query about screws

I attempted to replace the battery in my laptop, but the two screws that are fixing the battery to the laptop cannot be removed. The replacement battery does not come with screws for some reason so I'm trying to figure out how I can remove the screws. There are these circular metal pieces that prevent the screw from being removed, any ideas on how to remove these? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Not w/o a pic of the situation and the make/model of the laptop. I've never seen a laptop that required screws to be removed to change the battery. It usually just slides out after releasing a catch. You're not talking about the CMOS battery inside the case, are you?
