Hi. First off sorry if this is in the incorrect forum board first time using this forum. I just had to replace a PSU on my old computer. The PSU I bought to replace it does not have a long enough power cable to plug into my motherboard. My question is: if I bought a 8 pin extension cable would it work if the cable that the PSU came with is a 4+4 12V. This may be a dumb question, but I would like to save the $4.50 if the cables won't work together. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and if there is any additional information I need to give I will be happy to provide it.

Solution
yes, that 4+4 pin CPU power (called either ATX or EPS) is a standardized shape and pinout, with certain pins being square and certain pins being half-round (look at the connector and you'll see). typically the 4pin is called ATX and the 8pin is called EPS.

Thank you for the response! I guess my main fear what the 4+4 connector had different ends than the 8 pin. By that I mean there were different round ends vs square ends, but from what I am reading the round ends will fit in the square holes so the cable should fit fine. I mean I had previously had an 8 pin that worked fine and the 4+4 works fine as well. So, I guess I should have realized. Thank you again and I guess I will shell out another $4.50 so I can have the cable properly reach.

typically the 4pin cable fits into the left (or right) side of the 8pin connector on the motherboard, and the round/square pegs line up properly there. the 8pin socket is basically a pattern of (R=Round, S=Square)

so a 4pin cable that is
SR
RS

obviously fits into the side set of holes
