Hey guys, relevant specs are as follows:

Intel i7 920 OC to 3.6ghz (aftermarket cooler)
Nvidia GTX 480
8gb ddr3 ram

I have no issues running Arma 2 on high but I am uncertain how well this rig will run Arma 3? Epoch specifically. I would like it to run smoothly (obviously).

Thank you for any answers

As the below are the recommended settings and you mostly exceed or match them, you should be able to run the game fairly well. Just don't expect it to be as good as Arma 2. The latest installment is even more CPU heavy than the first, so this could be a factor.

RECOMMENDED
OS Windows 7 / 8 64-bit (Apple OS not supported)
PROCESSOR Intel Core i5-2300
AMD Phenom II X4 940
GRAPHICS Nvidia GeForce GTX 560
AMD Radeon HD 7750
GPU MEMORY 1 GB
DirectX® 11
RAM 4 GB
HARD DRIVE 25 GB free space
AUDIO DirectX® compatible soundcard
OTHER Internet connection and free Steam account to activate

You must not run super sampling and other filters. I run those and I get only about 70fps with gtx 980.

"Only 70fps"

He is right though, try using "smart" settings, turning off taxing settings that add fairly little to the overall look and feel and go for what is important like textures and a little bit of aa

Is 70fps that bad for this game? I am a bit of a 100+fps person myself.

No, you probably run killer settings and that is a very good number. Arma 3 is super tough, especially when you render really far ahead and filter that excessively.

More FPS is nice, however unless you run some stupidly expensive setup you need to compromise a bit here and there, even with such a nice gpu

A single gtx 980 was my compromise. I have a 144 hertz screen @ 1080p and I like 120 fps maxed out. For those that are cool with 60 fps they would get a 1440p with the gtx 980.
