If I install Win XP on a new HD in a new system, can I hook up my old Windows HD and read and copy data from it?

I seem to remember something about Windows not being able to read/write another HD that has Windows installed on it, for security reasons. But I'm not sure where I got that in my head and I could be totally wrong.

I have done that before. I think it was when I upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. I bought a new hard drive and installed that. I installed Windows XP on the new hard drive.

Then, I installed the old hard drive as a secondary drive. That is a great solution, because you have all of your data right there.

There are different file systems, however. Some of the older Windows systems can't read the files written by the newer systems, because of the format. Perhaps that's what you are thinking about.
